In an op-ed I co-authored with Jenn Jannon of Working America published today in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, we expressed our gratitude of the American labor movement finally recognizing the need to engage young earners in a meaningful way. Young earners are more likely than any other group not to have health insurance.

As the recession turns one year old, it’s something of an added sting that its anniversary falls around Labor Day. In the year since Wall Street collapsed, the bailouts began and our economy started shrinking, we’ve endured month after month of foreclosures, plant closures, liquidations, and bankruptcies. But most of all, we’ve seen staggering job losses with no apparent solution to stop the bleeding.

Sixty-some-odd days into the Obama Administration, and it's clear the Republican Party has staked out its place as an opposition party - at least for the short term. While it is desperately in search of a leader - someone to emerge as its new champion and juggernaut - it is apparent Michael Steele will not succeed in this role because he lacks both the power and respect of his Party to whip in line the bevy of factions and stop insanity like this:

Progressives in America need intelligent partners in governance who understand how to disagree on principal, yet work together toward compromise. Unfortunately, what conservatives have become after their November 4 implosion is the new "No, Nothing" Party of America.

As my maiden voyage into the blogosphere with everyday citizen, I wanted to issue a call to action.

Wanted: Innovative, forward-thinking entrepreneurs. Must be interested in saving the U.S. middle class from extinction as well as the planet from our bad habits and short sightedness. Must be able to multi-task and consider new modalities of business and energy generation. Visionary leadership a must. A basic understanding of green technology, hi-technology, and craftsmanship could lead to significant financial gains and advantages over competition. Act fast! Time is running out!
