John
Petty has been a Lutheran pastor for over twenty years. He is a graduate of Wartburg
Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and is currently pastor of All Saints
Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado. For theological insiders, he describes his
theology as "neo-orthodox trinitarian theology of the cross, with a Christus
Victor view of atonement theory."
John has been active in Habitat for Humanity
for over twenty years. He was Area Director for Church Relations with Habitat
International from 1995-2001 and was involved in many Habitat projects
domestically and internationally. Currently, he's Ecumenical Representative
for the Rocky Mountain Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America,
and chair of the Unity Commission of the Colorado Council of Churches.
John
has been active in politics since the Robert Kennedy campaign of 1968. He's
been a precinct committeeman for the Democratic party for over 37 years, in
three states, and has made just about "all the dang phone calls" he's ever
going to make. When he was a resident of Kansas, he served on the City
Commission of Hays, still one of his favorite places on earth, in the late
1970’s and early 1980’s. He says that everything he knows about
politics, he learned from
John T. Bird.
John has served as Co-Chair of the Hillary Clinton
campaign in Arapahoe County, Colorado, and was a delegate to the 2004
Democratic National Convention. Currently, he's a member of the Democratic
State Committee of Colorado. John writes about theology, politics
and culture
here and also at a personal

The Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade was held just the other day, on June 26, which would have been right smack dab in the middle of the GAFCON Conference.
Let me explain. GAFCON stands for the Global Anglican Future Conference which was held, in Jerusalem, June 22 - 29. It was called by conservative African bishops who are still in a snit because the Episcopalians of New Hampshire, in a free election, chose Gene Robinson, a gay man, to be their bishop five years ago.
I'll bet these gay-bashing bishops loved that parade! (/snark)

The New York Times is reporting that Sen. Clinton will "suspend" her campaign on Friday and endorse Sen. Obama. As a Hillary delegate, I'll do whatever Hillary tells me to do, but certainly plan to cast my vote for her at the convention. If Obama is the nominee, I'll put an Obama yard sign up as soon as I get home--which, since the whole deal is being held in our town, should be about half an hour after it's over, even allowing for traffic.
Funny thing. I think some people would have their worldview completely upended if they were to look at this campaign through the lens of a Clinton supporter. There is a whole mythology around the Clintons, originally coming mainly from Republicans, yes, but also widely shared among Democrats. Both conservatives and some liberals view both Clintons as completely unprincipled, power-mad, and "will do anything to win."

Talking points memo (TPM) goes through paroxysms trying to find a way for Obama to "thread the electoral needle" and win the election. They start by giving Obama all the states Kerry won in 2004.
Win Ohio or Florida and it's over. Unfortunately, he currently trails in both, and by a fairly large margin in Florida. Without Ohio, he needs to "flip" either Virginia or Colorado. Colorado is likely to go for Obama. Virginia is currently a toss-up. Win both and that would give him 274 electoral votes and a victory.
But would Obama win all the states Kerry won in 2004? He currently trails in Michigan, and if McCain chooses Romney as VP, that would probably take Michigan away.

I am honored to have been selected a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from my congressional district.
I would like to thank those in the Clinton caucus who voted for me. Let it be known: My vote will be for Hillary throughout the entire process. The only thing that could change that would be for Hillary herself to make the request. (Even Bill wouldn't be enough.)
I would especially like to thank the Colorado Latino Initiative for their endorsement. I very much appreciate it, and am honored to have your support. Adelante con Clinton!

The Sea of Galilee was also known as the Sea of Tiberias. Tiberias was Roman Emperor -- Caesar -- from AD 14 to AD 37. The Sea of Galilee was "Caesar's Sea," in other words. Caesar said who could and could not fish on "his" lake.
The first century Galilean fishing economy was not a "free market." Fishermen had to get a license from the local tax collector, quite likely in Capernaum. Capernaum had both a tax office, and a major harbor. In fact, it was probably the major fishing village on the Sea of Galilee. The tax collector might well have been Matthew, in fact, who was a tax collector in Capernaum.
Licenses tended to be sold to associations of fishermen, quite often based in kinship--James and John, for example, who had a "kinship-based fisherman's association," you might say, as did Peter and Andrew. Incidentally, all four of them were from Capernaum.
