When speaking to groups of students or progressive activists around the nation, Jason likes to begin by explaining why he feels he's something of an odd duck as city council member in a city of 3,000 in a red state: He's 24 (he'll be 25 next September), he's a progressive Democrat, and he is quite possibly the only openly gay elected official in his state. "Which one do you think people are most surprised about?" he asks. Nope, not the obvious one - nearly every time it's, "You're liberal and you got elected in Kansas?"
Active in politics since he was 15, Jason has had jobs as senior staff on two federal-level campaigns - one congressional, one senatorial. He currently serves as his county party's chairman and on the central committee of the Kansas Democratic Party. None of that compares, he says, to serving the people of his hometown on the city council. He says, "It's where government really hits the road. It's at the local level people really see and feel what their government is doing each and every day."
Jason lives in Osage City with his partner of 4 years and their two cats, Eddie and Edith. He welcomes mail - jason.croucher at gmail dot com. We're honored that Jason blogs with us.
