Dawne Leiker grew up in St. Francis, Kansas, and started Fort Hays State University as a piano performance major. She says that she as soon as she figured out that piano practice rooms didn't stock beer or offer disco, she made the switch and changed her major to political science. At least in the political science milieu, she found plenty of beer although not so much disco. Still, she explains, she somehow adapted. After graduation, Dawne married Glenn Leiker and moved to Colorado. Working as a bartender in Greeley and Denver, she put her political science education to frequent use in bar-room political debates.
Dawne and her husband moved back to Hays, Kansas to raise their kids. She's the mother of three children, Whitney, age 23, Lindsey, 18, and Colton, 12, and grandmother to Evin, age 3. While raising her children, Dawne spent eighteen years selling advertising for The Hays Daily News. Now, she's working on finishing a Masters in Liberal Studies with a concentration in public relations and journalism. She's working in the Leadership Studies Dept. and Center for Civic Leadership as a senior administrative
assistant.
Dawne's favorite things include yoga, music, and reading. She enjoys classic humor, like Monte Python, Marx Brothers or maybe a little W.C. Fields. Dawne recalls that during her undergrad years, she registered off the grid to the left in radical politics. While raising her kids, she seemed to move more to the right, again. Then, the Bush Administration moved her right back to the left. Dawne says this is her second chance to be a radical. She adds that her children are all good little radicals, without a single Republican in
the batch. Her entire family enjoys lively political debates and, finally, even the occasional outburst of disco. We're truly honored that Dawne has decided to blog with us here during this promising new radical phase of her life.
