Bill Shanahan is an independent scholar and freelance journalist. He is a talented and prolific writer. In addition to his regular blogging, Bill's writings are often published as columns or op-eds in newspapers. He has contributed a couple of chapters to a book on George Orwell's Animal Farm, and a quantitative communication piece which was published in a mainstream communication periodical. Bill published a dissertation on Friedrich Nietzche's rhetorical nihilism and is currently writing a book on Nietzsche's reception in Communist Germany.
He enjoys coaching debate teams and teaching persuasion and semantics. Each summer for the last twenty, Bill has taught at the Dartmouth Debate Institute. He also has taught at Pace, Vermont, Louisville, Wake Forest, and Weber State. Bill received his BS degree in speech communication from Boston's Suffolk University, his MA in Communication from Wake Forest University and his PhD in Speech Communication from University of Texas at Austin.
His other current interests include Giorgio Agamben, Martin Heidegger, rhetorical nihilism, and anarchy. As an activist, Bill sometimes participates in events that stimulate civic engagement or promote public discourse of ideas. He's a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
