Brad Andrews

Brad AndrewsCollege was the best thing that every happened to Brad. He says college years made him the person he is. Homecoming king, debate team captain, varsity striker on his high school soccer team, Brad had been the epitome of upper middle class American youth - though he spent every day horrified someone would discover he was gay. In Brad's first semester at K State, he surrounded himself with people from all sorts of backgrounds with a variety of opinions and life experiences that were significantly more broad then his own suburban upbringing. It only took a few weeks for him to finally be open about who he had always been. Brad had intended to pursue architecture and design, but enrolled in a political science leading to passion for political process, pushing aside his dreams of building skyscrapers.

Brad's passionate about issues: national issues, local issues, specific single issues like civil liberties. Whatever it is, he simply can't get enough. Brad's worked on both statewide and national campaigns, including presidential, state legislature, and city councils. As a young gay man in politics, an industry dominated by 50+ men, he knows what it means to fight for what you believe. Brad's always happy to talk with anyone else with a passion for a cause. He lives in Manhattan, though he travels most of the year. Brad can be reached at brad.andrews23 at gmail dot com. We're thrilled he's joined our community. Frontlines of the Culture War: Today I Said "Happy Holidays!"

By Brad Andrews on December 11, 2007

See, I was just being polite.

I didn't have to hold the door open for her in the snow, and I certainly didn't have to speak to her.

But, there I was, getting reamed by a 30-something woman outside of the grocery store- all because I said I hoped she'd have a "Happy Holidays" instead of saying "Merry Christmas."

But, hey, nothing puts you in the holiday spirit like a lecture in freezing rain, right?

An English-Only America Surrounded by a Barbed Wire Fence

By Brad Andrews on November 28, 2007

We all have to thank our lucky stars we live in a time when it isn't OK to be a racist.

Sure, there's still racism in America- just look at the situation in Jena, Louisiana and you can see that in some places and with some people racism is still a very real part of our culture. But, I believe I am safe in asserting the American people, generally, have decided that it isn't all right to hate someone because of their race.

I say that, though, knowing full well there is a creeping racism in this country that seems to be gaining steam rather than dying out. No, "mainstream America" grabbed a hold of this nasty idea and made it something that's "OK," something "everyone" thinks, so it's fine you do, too.

"But, seriously- who doesn't want all those damn illegals to go back to Mexico? And why, why, can't the ones who stay just learn English!"

I'm Disappointed in Them, Too

By Brad Andrews on October 29, 2007

CNN released a poll today that says 75% of Americans disapprove of the way Congress is working right now.

I hate to say it, but I'm in that 75%.
