Our Congress has worked around the clock to protect the wealthy at the expense of the lowest economic sector of our nation. We ambushed Saddam Hussein on the pretext of democracy, but the truth is Iraq has oil and we want it.
The battles in the mid east are over oil and protection or destruction of one nation, Israel. The Israelies and the Arabs have been at it since early Old Testament times.
Somalia has only starving people. What is in it for us? No oil! No glory in supposedly saving God's chosen people. Why in the world should we be concerned about a few starving mistreated people who don't have the means to help themselves?
I think maybe all people, Jews, Gentiles, Arabs, Christians, Atheists, Africans, savages, and gentlemen are God's people. We, as individuals who enjoy blessings, beyond what many people can imagine, should be very concerned over the imbalance of material wealth and political power.
We claim to be a Christian Nation. Did Jesus limit his compassion to those who appeared to have something of material value to give back, in return? Did Jesus look at political, or even religious identity before stretching out His hand to help someone? Is there any evidence that Jesus checked out the sexual orientation of those he helped? Didn't he, even, say that some who made no claims of recognizing the God of the Jews or Christians were more compassionate and caring than the religious bigots of His day?
Need I say more?

A wonderful blog, Ken. Thank you for giving a compassionate and inclusive Christian view on the problems of this nation. The tone of the recent debate on the debt ceiling really made me feel down. I haven't really read much about what is going on in Somalia until now. Hopefully voices like yours will draw more attention to the starving, the marginalized, and the poor.

Mr. Poland;
Have you ever watched the movie “Black Hawk Down?” For humanitarian reasons only, the U.N., along with Bush 41 and Bill Clinton, did their best to get food to the starving people of Somalia in 1992 and 93 to reverse the famine and genocide taking place there – oil NEVER figured into the equation. But what happened was the warlord in power there, along with his gangs, intercepted food shipments to keep their own people starving and then began targeting U.N. officials and Army Rangers. A mini war broke out and we ended up pulling out before we could get the warlord (Adid) out of power to restore peace and feed the hungry. We lost that little war, with dead Army Rangers and Delta-Force operators, and Somalia remains today one of the most dangerous places in the world.

" – oil NEVER figured into the equation."
Jonathan, that's just what I said! Somalia has nothing we need. Bush 41, Clinton, nor any any other President can get the backing of this great "Christian" nation to engage in humanitarian programs, when there is nothing of material value to be gained for the corporations that put the lobbiests on the floor. The big push, even then (before 9-11) was to go after Sadam Hussein and Iraq. Bush 41 refused to listen, but GW jumped right in.
