Penny Anny Solutions (Stuff and Nonsense)

By Ken Poland
March 31, 2011

Are we all in a trance, both liberals and conservatives? We sit and watch the evening news, listen to our favorite talk show hosts: Fox, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, Frog Pond Croakers, or whoever. No one seems to be able to differentiate between their BS and their own BS.

The budget wrangles in congress are not even close to addressing the issues with any sane and sensible plan. Wrangling over the difference of 6 billion or 60 billion is 'stuff and nonsense!'

It appears both sides of the aisle are content with targeting those in society, with cuts, who are least able to absorb those cuts without drastic reductions in their lifestyles. Most of those cuts won't touch the upper middle class, and will actually benefit the ultra rich.

I just read, in my local paper, what our U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp had to say about our economy and how we can deal with the deficits and long term indebtedness. His opposition in the next election is going to have to be extremely evil, before I choose Tim as the lessor of the two evils!

On the subject of Social Security, he states,

"On this, there is good news, and then there is bad news. Let's start with the bad. Washington can't ever hope to repay the IOU's because they spent every last borrowed dollar over the last few decades. Plus, they borrowed trillions more from other sources to pay for an ever growing government."

Unbelievable? That is an exact quote. Quite an astute observation, don't you think? We lost a tooth and the tooth fairy doesn't have a quarter to bail us out. You folks paid in all those dollars and we redistributed those investments to save having to raise income taxes. So, now, you'll just have to be happy with what you've got left. Put your pets to sleep, turn the thermostat down, and start eating soyburgers and drinking tap water. You can't afford your medicine; well shucks, you're gonna die sooner or later, so just face it. Can't pay your rent? Well, the government can't afford public housing, so you'll just have to find a big card board box and hope the neighbor won't mind if you camp out on the back 40. Be careful in choosing the location though, local ordinances to protect property values won't allow you to put down roots in some areas.

Why don't you try telling your lender that you've spent every last dollar you borrowed and just can't be expected to make payments on your mortgage. Good luck! You'll either make payments or turn your assets over to the lender.

Us old folks don't have much clout, so I guess we'll just tough it out. Now, how about you investors who have invested in government bonds. Are you going to just say, "Oh well, win a few and lose a few. We bet on the losing horse." What do you suppose China or some of the other nations who have invested in U.S. bonds are going to do? They are going to just say, "Gee, we're sorry you overspent. We'll just forgive and throw away these worthless IOU,s you signed."

We save a few billion by cutting from 25% to 100% of the programs for the poor, so we can protect the wealthy folks from suffering loss of tax breaks. We demand union workers give concessions on wages, health care, job security, etc. If labor is unwilling to protect the corporate profits, we'll just close down and move overseas. Then we reward the top level management and CEOs with phenomenal salary increases and bonuses.

All of you readers who drop in and visit had best check into how your representatives are addressing our national economy. Statistics indicate that 10% of the population control over 90% of the nation's wealth and 90% of the population shares the remaining 10% of national wealth. And then, get this, 10% of the next category control 90% of what's left. And the % of sharing goes right on down the line till the bottom 20% of the population have nothing. Where do you fit on this scale?

A great blog, Ken, about the horrible state of the financial disparities between the super rich and everyone else.

Ken--I think everyone is in a trance. When I saw the Wisconsin union members take to the streets, I actually had some hope that people were going to wake up. I did read today that the recall effort has garnered enough signatures to go forward. But it's going to take more than this. People can't just sit and moan about how bad things are. They have to get active like they've been only a few times in our history. They have find candidates for office and get them elected, candidates who will come up with good solutions to our problems and won't be beholden to the Kochs and the other billionaires who now run our government. I've been an activist for progressive causes all my life, but I've reached a point at which I'm worn down to a nubbin. The people who are going to be most affected by these bad moves are going to have to be the ones making the changes.

I have to say, when I watched the protests in Wisconsin, I ask myself how many of those people voted for Walker, buying into the mantra that they needed a change. If people don't wake up, things will only get worse. We'll be voices crying in the wilderness.
