Zakim Bridge to go RED for World Aids Day!

By Tatiana McKinney
December 1, 2009

Today is going to be an exciting day! Many of the world's biggest monuments will "Go Red" in honor of World AIDS Day!

According to the Boston Globe, "The Zakim, the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, will have the bulbs changed in its inner lights from blue to red. The bridge will be bathed in crimson-colored light at dusk for (RED), an organization that raises money to support AIDS programs in Africa. (RED) will reimburse the MassDOT Highway Division for all costs incurred for the lighting."

Exciting, Right?

The (RED) organization was founded by Bono from the Irish rock group U2 and Bobby Shriver. The group's mission is to bring together consumers, the private sector, and government to eliminate AIDS in Africa. (RED) says it has raised $140 million for the Global Fund, supporting AIDS programs in Africa that have reached more than 4 million people with testing, counseling, medication, and services.

Below you will find a full-list of monuments participating in "RED" campaign this evening:

  • Baltimore, MD: The Washington Monument in Baltimore
  • Boston, MA: The Zakim Bridge
  • Chicago, IL: CNA Building. The AIDS ribbon and the words “FIGHT AIDS” in lights on the side of the building
  • Columbus, OH: City Hall & the Columbus Public Health Building will be (RED) for the entire week!
  • Dublin, Ireland: City Hall
  • London, England: the London Eye and the Trafalgar Square Fountain
  • Los Angeles, CA: the Central Library in downtown Los Angeles and the pylons around LAX airport
  • Pittsburgh, PA: the City & County Building and the needle on top of the Highmark Building
  • Providence, RI: City Hall, 1 Financial Plaza, 111 Westminster Street and the Skating Center at Kennedy Plaza
  • Salt Lake City, UT: The City & County Building
  • San Francisco, CA: City Hall & Coit Tower
  • St. Louis, MO: Civil Courts Building
  • Torrance, CA: Girl Skate Park

If you're in any of these areas, please go and support the "RED" organization and all the work it does for the Global Fund!
