Using the Bible to Self-indict?

By Jean Binder
November 17, 2009

Recently Rachel Maddow and possibly other commentators high-lighted the dangerous practice of some benighted right wingers using the Bible to attempt to bring the President down. They quote Psalm 109 on bumper-stickers saying things like, "Let his days be short;" "May another take his place;" or "Let his children be fatherless," implying of course that the Bible is trying to tell us something about our President.

The only thing is, if one actually reads Psalm 109, it becomes clear that these things are what the EVIL people can be expected to say against a good and righteous leader. These people are self-indicting and don't even know it. They should actually read the Psalm if they want to quote it.

What's that they say about the devil quoting scripture?

Jean, thank you, for a so pertinent observation. The basic free market capitalist rationale (ala Ayn Rand) is essentially the opposite of Christianity. Rand was an atheist and thought the social justice mandate was foolish--that what she called "objectivism" or ruthless self-interest was the most reasonable way. I almost despair that so many otherwise good, ordinary people embrace an economic and social philosophy Christ would surely be pained by.

Jean, those who lift text from context are usually guilty of sophistry. They are using the scripture to approve themselves.

Sorry, capitalism is not the opposite of Christianity, sir. Read Matthew 25:14-30. God wants us to work hard and pull our own weight. God does not want us to beg, panhandle, and rely on hand outs from others. I would say that Christ would be pained by someones state of despair - not by an economic policy.
