I can't help it. I am so upset at these right-wing wackos in my state who actually walk around in fear of the 2nd Amendment being taken away from them. Instead, they sport the latest fad - a concealed weapon. More so, we have a tax-free holiday on... Guns.
The state of South Carolina calls it "Second Amendment Weekend" and while it's not law, it was included in the state's budget for just this weekend. I call it idiotic.
We already face some of the deepest cuts in budget history with our state agencies and these Republicans evade paying taxes - providing revenue to our state government - with this pure pandering to its base.
The idea was born in election year 2008. It should have died after the S.C. Supreme Court ruled that it was part of a law that violated the state constitution. That ruling came too late to stop last year's "Second Amendment Weekend."
But when are we as a people in this state going to stand up against such stupidity? When's enough enough for those in more need? Are we going to just do what's right rather than what's popular?
State economic officials estimated it would cost the state about $15,000 in lost revenue this year. It cost roughly the same last year. Money that could have helped agencies in need of revenue - public education, for one.
But this is South Carolina. A state where we could care less because we're too busy drinking beer and whoo-hooing it to vote Republican because it's the "right" thing to do.
BS. I am sick and tired of these Republican lawmakers driving the residents of this state down into the ground. It's embarrassing.
So, to all 12 percent of the jobless in South Carolina: Republicans say stuff it, buy a gun and vote for me because I protected your 2nd Amendment rights.
One thing, though.
How the hell are you going to buy a gun without a job?

Jamie, "you're right on target." The political air here in Kansas isn't much more breathable. The 2nd Amendment paranoia plays well here, too, as does the moronic notion that Christianity is "under attack." You'd think we all had to attend the church of our choice at the risk of our lives. I'd guess, however, that you have more company than you realize. Thanks for working to inspire the quiet ones to speak up.

Jamie, I'm a ham radio operator and I was listening in on a conversation the other night from several guys in the deep South. One of them said that a local fundamentalist preacher invited his congregation to bring their guns to church one Sunday, in support of the Second Amendment and Christianity.
Absolute insanity. Unfortunately, these are the kinds of lemmings who will be driven over the cliff by the people in Jeff Mincey's post.
I'm a gun owner, and a believer in the Second Amendment, but the crazies have taken over any reasonable discussion about gun ownership.
