South Carolina Republicans enjoy more unregulation with legal defense fund

By Jamie Sanderson
November 27, 2009

South Carolina can jump for more joy now. State Republicans and their party embraced the news that the state has no power to provide oversight - regulation - over a planned legal defense fund for election, ballot and candidate court issues.

McClatchy Newspapers writer John O'Conner shares the truth in an article that hopefully will wake up the very people who put them in office decade after decade.

That means the public won't know who is donating money to candidates, and there are no limits on how much money can be contributed to the fund.

S.C. Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd announced in September the party would begin collecting donations for a legal defense fund, a response, in part, to a libel lawsuit filed on behalf of Spartanburg Rep. Rita Allison. An anonymous mail piece sent to voters in Allison's district alleged Allison had an affair with Gov. Mark Sanford, for whom she worked as an adviser and legislative liaison.

Floyd, a former candidate for South Carolina's Superintendent of Education, ran a strong race against current Democratic office holder - and current gubernatorial candidate - Jim Rex. She supported the private school voucher program, funded by public taxpayer dollars.

And was rewarded handsomely during her campaign.

Karen Floyd – Supt. of Education candidate (defeated) Ashborough Investors - $3,500 Spinksville LLC - $3500 West 14 & 18 LLC - $3500 Spooner LLC - $3500 405 49 Associates - $3,500 538-14 Realty, LLC - $3,500 Silver & Silver Properties, LLC - $3,500 123 LaSalle Associates - $3,500 123 LaSalle, Inc. - $3,500 Bayrich, LLC - $3,500 Dayrich, LLC - $3,500 Bradford Management of NY - $3500 405 49 Associates - $3500 Ashborough Investors -$3500

But what you do not see are the services provided by Rich's front groups like S.C. Club for Growth or South Carolinians for Responsible Government. They don't disclose their funding either, and the people of South Carolina suffer because these types see their demands catered to before anybody else's.

So, Republicans put its people further in the dark - only to reap the benefits themselves.
