SC: Georgetown Steelworkers Approved for TAA Benefits

By Jamie Sanderson
November 4, 2009

A little bit of good news...

The U.S. Department of Labor has approved a petition filed by the Local 7898 Steelworkers Union for training assistance and benefits for the more than 200 ArcelorMittal union and non-union who have been indefinitely laid off since June 10.

The company temporarily shut the mill down due to a lack of orders and will not reopen until market conditions improve, which is not expected to be until 2011.

Under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program, which was expanded under the stimulus bill, workers will receive up to 130 weeks of cash payments for workers enrolled in full-time training programs; up to $1,500 in job search allowance; about $1,500 in job relocation expenses and a tax credit covering 80 percent of participants monthly insurance premiums.

Hopefully, people in South Carolina will see the benefits of a unionized workforce when such dismal situations take place.
