It's You, Not Me

By Jennifer Schwaller
September 11, 2009

Dear Wall Street Journal,

During World War II, this was called a Dear John letter. That was a long time ago, but this is still the same kind of letter. I'm breaking up with you.

Together for over 10 years, I read you almost every day, Monday through Friday, even on weekends. I figured that even though I'm mostly a Democrat (yes, I vote for Republicans too), I was a conservative enough gal that we could get along, and heck, I would learn something to boot. You let me know that the housing crisis was starting two years before it hit. You amused me with your funny little editorials, asserting the greatness of George W. Bush. Your panic when Barack Obama started gaining in the polls against McCain was adorable.

But then Obama won, and you became unfunny and unattractive.

You became a hate filled boor, much like my Great Uncle when he went from "having too much to drink" to "having WAY too much to drink". In fact, I thought of him today. Memories of when he had drunk way too much Old Crow filled my mind when I read your guest editorial "Why are Jews Liberal". Great Uncle held similar views.

You crossed the line, Wall Street Journal. As much as you may woo me with your witty human interest stories about Amish romance novels, we're done. I canceled my subscription.

I don't want to be friends.

Jennifer

Great post, Jennifer. I used to read the Journal every day. I thought, at the time, that it was important to listen in on how rich, powerful elites talked to each other about the world they owned and the proles who threatened it. But, like you, at a certain point I just wasn't learning anything I did not already know about this crew. I realized I wasn't reading anything that wasn't small and frightened. Life's too short. I love my conservative friends. We kid each other, have a lot of laughs, and there is genuine affection and respect between us. But the WSJ is no longer insightful, just increasingly ugly. I am glad you dumped him; you can do so much better.
