The times... they are a changing

By Jenifer Daniels
August 4, 2009

My mind has been in a tizzy for about a month. I can't stomach the sound of this noise coming from the radio and TV. The sound I am hearing is ignorance. And its giving me a headache.

I was always taught that in life, there is only one constant - change. So imagine my surprised when some neophyte upstart from Illinois ran on this tenet. I was like 'wow, this guy gets me'! And foolish of me to think that the rest of America grew up like me.

So fast forward a few months to this upstart of ignorance that is running rampant in this country. And no, while you or neighbor hasn't fallen prey to it - someone has, and they are spreading it like a disease.

My first foray into this ignorance came in one of my classes. I was simply going about teaching a communication theory that involves red herrings and I mentioned something about the President and this birth certificate issue and low and behold (and through my laughter) I hear a student perk up and say 'what's so silly about that?' and wouldn't you know, I was shocked.

I knew I'd read about this 'birther' business on blogs but I had no clue that folks were taking this argument off of the interwebs and into the mainstream. Heck, half of the class didn't even know what I was talking about. But this student did and he was adamant that this was a fair question to have asked. And that is when I knew we had a problem.

Remember when the internet was all abuzz about Tommy Hilfiger going on Oprah saying something to the effect of 'I don't make my clothes for black people'... absurd I know. No one could refer to a transcript or video footage but I had that repeated to me throughout college as I sauntered around campus wearing red, white and blue. Folks believed that right, and they had no proof to back it up. I even knew some folks who lied about seeing it.

After that day I knew we were headed for trouble. I knew that this gentlemen, who served us in the Armed Forces, used his GI Bill to go back to school and was currently working in computer systems was a logical person but for some reason, he believed in the illogical lie that has seeped into the mouths of trusted journalists like Lou Dobbs.

Now I am not 100% sure as to why this theory has spread like wildfire. I have my thoughts but I won't pass judgment because I really don't know the motivation. But what I do know is that this is sickening and its making me physically ill. I can't stomach this nonsense because I know it stems in fear of the unknown... which is the framework for our current state of ignorance.

Times have changed America... and not just with your president. America is black, brown, yellow and red; gay, straight, lesbian and bi-sexual; its the New South and the Rust Belt; co-housing and condos; but most of all, it is different. And I know I am preaching to the choir here but it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be said. So I ask that all who read this to take the time to educate your friends and neighbors as to watch change is - tell them it isn't scary but it is inevitable.
