Obama hints at opening White House farmers market

By Kelly Jacobsen
August 24, 2009

Shortly after the Obama family moved into the White House, First Lady Michelle broke ground on the South Lawn and planted a garden with a group of elementary school students to stress the importance of eating fresh, organic foods.

Now, the President and First Lady have another idea for how to provide Washington DC residents with fresh foods while also boosting the revenue of local farmers.

Last week, while participating in a health care forum, President Obama mentioned that he and Michelle are exploring the possibility of opening a farmers market outside of the White House.

The idea would be to sell food grown in the White House garden or from local farmers. “It gives D.C. more access to good, fresh food, but it also is this enormous potential revenue-maker for local farmers in the area,” the President said.

As big fan of farmers markets, I’d love to see the First Family use their influence to encourage local, healthy eating.

And I am sure that I wouldn’t be the only one hoping to run into a few White House staffers picking up produce on their way in and out of the office. President Obama is clearly a fan of peaches, but I’m wondering if Chief Speechwriter Jon Favreau likes them too…
