Are You Opinionated?

By Kari Rinker
August 7, 2009

WICHITA, Kansas - Having an opinion takes no time, work, money or ingenuity. Based upon my personal experience in various exchanges, it apparently doesn’t require heightened intelligence, savvy or charm. All it takes is one person, one mouth and the need to be heard. This goes for either side of any argument. You can pick any topic of discussion. Being able to state your opinion with big words, backed by college degrees and the latest talking points readily at hand does not make your opinion any more effective toward enacting real and lasting change in society than the next person’s.

After the assassination of Dr. George Tiller, an up swell of pro-choice opinions came to the surface via community discussions, blogs, web sites, television, radio, everywhere you turned…pro-choice voices were being heard! It gave me hope. I felt that real change would surely come.

The momentum of these voices could not be ignored, denied or silenced any longer. The time for a movement was upon us, those that would deny us our equality and reproductive freedom would NOT win with the assassination of our doctor. This was the wake up call for activists everywhere! Or... were these simply just opinions? Opinions voiced during a time of emotion and sadness, but opinions nonetheless. I sincerely hope not.

I sincerely hope that the tragedy that has highlighted the extremely fragile state of a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion in this nation, spurs people to action. I sincerely hope that this tragedy clearly shows just how the vile and violent among our opposition walk the path to become murderers. I sincerely hope that laws designed to protect doctors, clinic workers and women seeking private medical intervention in their pregnancies are enforced at all levels of government. I sincerely hope that opinions become more than opinions, and that the courage of Dr. George Tiller is honored through ACTION.

Those that opposed Dr. Tiller so rabidly during the course of his life have not taken a hiatus. They remain focused. They have their eye on a new prize, and his name is Dr. Leroy Carhart. Dr. Carhart runs a clinic in Belleview, Nebraska. Operation Rescue will publicly begin the next stage of their war on women by protesting his clinic on August 28 and 29th. Dr. Carhart has asked that Kansas NOW help defend his clinic. Will you help? Will you lock arms and stand up to defend a doctor that has vowed to defend women? Will you turn your opinion into action? I sincerely hope so. Please go to the Kansas NOW Facebook page for further details about the event or contact me.
