Twittering at Campaign Academy: Raj Goyle for Kansas!

By Pamela Jean
July 12, 2009

Yesterday, I was delighted to among about one hundred attendees at DFA's Campaign Academy 2-day training in Wichita, Kansas, when State Rep. Raj Goyle (D) made the announcement that he intends to run for U.S. Congress in 2010, in House District KS-04.

The congressional seat Raj intends to win is currently held by Todd Tiahrt (R), who is vacating it for his run for the U.S. Senate. It is widely believed that Todd Tiahrt will, in turn, win the Republican primary for the Senate seat currently held by Sam Brownback (R). After Sam Brownback's failed presidential primary last year, Brownback's now hoping to take over Kansas governorship. It's a gruesome set of musical chairs. There is only one bright spot in that entire scenario - Raj Goyle winning the U.S. House seat. A bright spot indeed!

The elated response among our room full of activists yesterday was over-whelming. The stream of happy twittering was immediate...

Through the applause, members of our group could be heard exclaiming, "This is such good news!" or, "I am so getting behind that man," and, "He's exactly the candidate that can win."

A lifelong Kansan, Raj first won a seat in the Kansas House in 2006. Since assuming office, he's never missed a vote in the state house, never taken a free personal meal or gift from a lobbyist, and never taken a taxpayer-funded trip. He made his intentions clear:

"I am running because too many Kansas families and businesses are struggling right now. We need strong, independent leadership to tackle these challenges."
We agree, Raj.

About eight writers from EverydayCitizen.com have been attending the Campaign Academy training in Wichita this weekend. (There may be more and if I did not notice you, please forgive me!) The Everyday Citizen writers that I did find at the training included: Mike Nellis, Colin Curtis, Tanner Willbanks, Stuart Elliott, me, Kari Ann Rinker, Eden Fuson and George Dungan.

There were also many others at the training who may soon be writers at Kansas Free Press, too, like Sean Tevis or Kathie Moore.

Attention Tweeple! If you want to follow the excitement on Twitter - the hash for the Campaign Academy is #dfaKS - and for Raj Goyle's announcement, it's #Raj10.

(I'll write more about the training itself in my next post, very soon...)
