To Sarah, From Andy

By Henry Schwaller
June 16, 2009

Dear Governor Palin,

Gee, I don't know what to say.

I mean, there you were, last August, so strong and beautiful - you looked like such a leader!

Then, you gave that speech - I loved the joke about the pit bull and the hockey mom. That was great.

It made you seem more real, more down to earth, but a fighter, too. Remember that old movie where Bette Davis runs that cotton mill? You were just like that, only clever and cute, too.

I was not a Democrat or a Republican, or anything like that, really. See, I never showed much interest in politics. I was interested in politicians as famous people - you know, Kennedy, Reagan, that whole thing. I loved celebrities! In fact, my entire life - my work, my fame, my success - was based on celebrities and fame.

A lot of people remember me for two things - the Campbells soup can and my famous line: In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes. I can't tell you how many free meals I got out of that one.

Here's what that meant: carefully create an image for yourself. Then protect it. Don't overuse it.

People called me stupid, reclusive, untalented, abusive, lazy - a lot of things - but I kept on working and polishing my image. I saw new ways to use my image - and build on it, too. I think that I did pretty good, but I could have worked harder. And I really miss not being able to see reality TV shows. Did you know that I came up with that idea, too?

Sarah - can I call you that? Sarah, I think you're great, but you've had a lot of overexposure lately. I mean, that whole Letterman thing, what a stupid joke, but you have to admit it was funny.

Going on and on about it doesn't look good for you. And looks are the main thing that you've got going for you.

So be careful. Say a few cute things every now and then, write a book, and keep working. Just don't be out so much. Liza once told me: "Always leave them wanting more." She was such a smart girl.

Gee, too bad I'm not around any more. I'd love to do your portrait!

Love,
Andy
