Target on the Mark

By Lisa Attrill
June 14, 2009

Who doesn't LOVE to shop at Target? They have good prices, nice and trendy items and now there is another reason to patronize their stores in Australia.

That's right - they are among the first large retailers who are making a difference for the environment!

It all just makes me want to run over and spend a bunch of money!!!

In the Australia news media I recently heard some good news for the environmental movement.

One of my favorite retailers, Target, is taking the lead in Australia by banning the use of plastic shopping bags in their stores nationwide. The move which will save an estimated 100 million bags a year according to their statistics, will be effective in the 283 stores in Australia. Customers may bring provide their own shopping bag, buy a cloth bag for $1.00 or a recyclable cornstarch bag for .10 cents.

This does make it a little less convenient for customers but it will save the landfills and waterways. The other good side to this is that the money Target makes on selling the re-usable or recyclable bags willl be donated in Australia to a children's charity, the Alannah and Madeline Foundation (information provided by the WAtoday.com.au website).

I don't know if this effort will reach the United States but doesn't this make you want to go shopping today?!
