Lessons Learned: First Week in DC

By Kelly Jacobsen
June 15, 2009

After living in Washington D.C. for just over a week, I am, of course, well-prepared to share with you a few bits of knowledge I’ve gained in my short time here.

Go to Jazz in the Garden and prepare a picnic dinner. I went, along with two other interns from the League of Conservation Voters (See, Mom! I am making friends) this past Friday night and I couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant evening. We were not entirely sure what we were getting into and came without a blanket or chair, but were still able to enjoy the evening with hundreds of other Washingtonians.

Speaking of Washingtonians read this online magazine and follow them on Twitter. I learned of their guide to city when I stopped for some delicious (and sustainable!) SweetGreen Frozen Yogurt outside of their office and I’ve been hooked ever since. Each week, they deliver inside guides to the best events happening around the city, from free film screenings to pricey cocktail parties.

Do NOT wear heels if you have a walking commute. People kindly passed this tip along to me before I came to the city, but on my first day of work I was stubborn and pressed for time and left my house without comfortable walking shoes. My grandmother used to tell me that “shoes can make or break your day” and rightly so, my day was broken. Needless to say, I haven’t made that same mistake twice.

Don’t pass up an opportunity to visit the Newseum. Although it isn’t one of the free museums in town, it is well worth the $20 admission price ($18 for students). Among my favorite exhibits were Professional and Amateur photography from the 2008 campaign cycle and Inauguration, as well as a film about the news coverage during and following the September 11 terrorist attacks. Also a plus is the food court in the basement catered by Wolfgan Puck. For around $10 you can get a cheeseburger or pizza made to order.

Finally, men are simply more attractive in Washington D.C. I noticed it as soon as I arrived, but Politico has apparently taken notice as well. While I strongly disagree with their assertion that Chuck Todd is attractive, I have been keeping my eye out for Jon Favreau on the Metro. If you see him, let him know nothing beats a girl from the Midwest.
