With the recent gangland-style murder of Des Moran, the story of mobsters in Australia sounds like something out of Hollywood. Secret conversations, wigs, get-a-way cars, and a shootout in broad daylight while the victim sat at his table drinking coffee.
Recently, a story broke in the news in Melbourne that sounded like something out of a Hollywood movie such as "The Godfather." I watched the news footage in disbelief as the police blocked off the crime scene - a local cafe - in a very busy part of town.
Here's the background provided by The Australian- Des "Tuppence" Moran was shot and killed by two assassins at the cafe in broad daylight while sipping his coffee. Judy Moran, who is the wife of his elder brother (who was also killed) was seen leaving her garage in the alleged getaway car used by his killers (she was even wearing white gloves). Hours later, Judy Moran and another person were arrested for accessory to murder.
This story is very interesting and reminds me of early Chicago mobsters. It involves wigs, getaway cars, secret inside feuds among the most notorious crime family in Melbourne, Australia. Between 1998-2006, the bloodbath included the deaths of Judy's two sons (Mark and Jason) and husband Lewis. She appeared in television clips from previous occasions to be very outspoken and available to the media but on this day she was in the back of a car with a dark coat, dark sunglasses half visible.
Other arrests in the recent murder included: Judy's roommate, Suzanne Kane (also sister-in-law to Mark Moran), who was arrested for accessory; Suzanne's boyfriend Geoffrey "Nuts" Amour (I'm not making this up folks) who was arrested for murder, and another man also arrested for murder. Apparently, Judy had driven the get-a-way car to another part of town, left the murder weapons in the car, abandoned the car and was in the process of walking home (she discarded her gloves in the brush).
As listed in the Australian, the police warrant at Mrs Moran's home revealed a hidden safe - discovering three handguns, clothing that matched the description of the two men involved in the shooting, a wig and two stolen Victorian license plates. Hard to believe Mr. Moran already survived an apparent murder attempt in March of this year.
While police have assured the public this is not a case of gang-land retribution it is certainly not a "typical" story you expect to hear on the news. I sat affixed to the television set not believing that I was watching some of this unfold. The news just kept getting stranger as the details emerged in the local media.
Truly a Hollywood movie in the making.
