I wasn't surprised when Rep. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) voted against the Matthew Shepard Act this past April.
The federal law - which easily passed the House of Representatives, even without Jerry's vote - would classify certain criminal offenses as hate crimes.
Jerry's no stranger to the topic; actively working against such measures has been a hallmark of his entire political career.
In 2004, he proudly told a group of senior citizens in Burdett, Kansas, about his long-standing opposition to all things homosexual...
Evelyn Mettling raised her hand. "Where do you stand on same-sex marriages?" she asked softly.More laughter.
Moran smiled broadly, then turned serious. "We are considering ... the Senate is considering a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman," he said looking around the room.
More applause.
"That makes a lot of sense," Moran said.
More applause.
He said the issue came up when he was a state senator. "I voted to define marriage that way in Kansas, and the concern we must have today is that a court may determine that marriage in Massachusetts is the law of the land and Kansas would have to recognize that marriage in our state," he said.
But some of Jerry's biggest supporters - including those in his hometown - don't understand his stance against gay, lesbian and bisexual people. Many of Jerry's supporters have gay friends and family members, employ gay people in their businesses, and sell their products and services to gay people all over the country - not just in Kansas. Even more shocking, some of Jerry's supporters - and friends - are gay.
What's wrong with this picture? How can a popular politician create the perception that he is "independently minded" when his Congressional voting record is extremely conservative? More importantly, why do all of his supporters allow him the luxury of this double standard?
It's time to challenge Representative Moran. Let's look at his voting record on every issue, not just civil rights. Compare it to his public statements and personal relationships. Otherwise, he'll continue this game all the way into the U.S. Senate.

Thanks for posting this! I am glad to see someone holding our elected officials accountable for the votes they cast while in DC. We must show them we are both listening to what they say AND watching how they vote.

What an amazing blog, I'm so excited you wrote about it. As someone who believes very strongly in equality I think the people who also believe in it shouldn't be attacked the way Jerry certainly would be if he came out as being gay friendly... All he really has to do is become a democrat - I mean his party doesn't really want him anyway! They are more Brownback people...
Again, great job with the piece

Jerry is way too far right for the Democratic Party. He has stated that he would like to eliminate the mandatory spending for Social Security and Medicare. He would prefer to make this a year-to-year discretionary expenditure - meaning, the programs would have to be eliminated altogether. Jerry is very very far right and does not at all vote middle of the road. Look closely at his voting record. You'll see that he is lockstep with the far right over 90% or more of the time. He is NOT A MODERATE.
Thanks for telling the truth about him, Henry. You are right that if we start to scrutinize his every vote - more people will see the truth too.

The congressman has been flying under the radar, billing himself as a "moderate" for years, but his votes tell a totally different story. Great reporting!
