Blogging While Brown!

By Zola Jones
June 18, 2009

One of my newest friends on Facebook (thank you Hannah!) has reminded me today that this is the last day to register for Blogging While Brown. The first conference was held in Atlanta, GA in July 2008. The second conference is being held in Chicago, IL on June 19-20, 2009. You don't have to be African American or Hispanic or tanned to attend! If you are interested in going to this conference this weekend in Chicago, you must register today! Right now!

The conference organizers say that Blogging While Brown presents a rare opportunity for organizations looking for exposure to those responsible for creating dynamic and engaging new media. Attendees can network with and learn from each other, most of whom are innovators and early adopters of media technology. Blogging While Brown was created in response to widespread dissatisfaction with the amount of diversity in some of the largest blogging conferences.

A critical mass of Bloggers of Color has yet to attend these established conferences, however the initial response from Bloggers of Color to the idea of holding their own conference has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Bloggers of Color are excited about a conference, for, by and about them and look forward to moving beyond the single panel or discussion focusing on diversity that are typically featured at some of the larger blogging conferences.

The purpose of Blogging While Brown is to give Bloggers of Color an opportunity to meet each other for the first time, discuss current issues affecting Bloggers of Color, and learn about the latest technology that will assist them with publishing their work.

Presenters at the conference include Monroe Anderson, Cheryl Contee (AKA Jill of Jack & Jill Politics), Carmen Dixon Rosenzweig (creator of All About Race), Eric Easter (of EbonyJet.com), Hajj E. Flemings, Milt Haynes (founder of Blacks Gone Geek), Angel Laws, Fredric Mitchell (blogging at Young Black Professional Guide), Pam Spaulding, and Megan Tady.

As with most blogger communities, it's not the speakers that draw the attendees - it's the attendees themselves. The grooviest aspect of blogger conferences is the networking and the sharing that organically arises out of conversations in the hallways, in the bathrooms, at the bar or at dinner.

To get an idea of how cool this conference will be because of the cool brought by the attendees, take a look at all these blogs that will be represented in Chicago this weekend:

5 and a Possible, A Buzz in Your Ear, Acts of Faith in Love and Life, Afrobella, All About Race, Around Harlem, Around NYC, Awesomely Luvvie, Beckie Has a Blog, Beyond-isms, Black Gyrl Cancer Slayer, Black PR, Blacks Gone Geek, Blank Bare Clean, Blog Not War, blogHer, Bronzeville Change, Brother Bartell, Brown and Bridal, But You Are A Girl, Carlos in DC, Change You Can See, Chartreuse, Color of Change, Concrete Loop, Consumer Blast, Cyber PR Urban, D Jones Productions, Dallas South Blog (go Dallas South!), Dante Lee, Dragon Fly, Ebony Jet, Flack Me, Fresh Manna of the Day, Global Wire, Global Wire, Goddess Intellect, Hajj Flemings, Harmonic Leadership, Haute Muslim, Have a Wonderful, I Hate My Developer, IT Empowers U, Jack and Jill Politics, Jamal Street Journal, Kiamsha.com:That Which Awakens Me, Listen to Leon, Live Life Posh, Locs and Dreams, Love a Black Woman, Marty Blogs, Megans Minute, Michelle Obama Watch, Miss Theda, Mocha Mom 365, Monroe Anderson, Naomi Christine, Pams House Blend, Peruanista, Philena, Photo Solitude, Pocket Book Protest, Project New Era, Queen Tahj, Save the Internet, See Your Worth, Small World View, Social Media Socialite, South Shore Chamber, TATV, The Joba Group, The Smak, The SuperSpade, Theo Talks, Urban Beauty, Urban Science, UWISHUNU, We Are Black Women, What About Our Daughters, Woman Body and Soul, YBP Guide.

Pretty impressive group. I don't know if any of our EverydayCitizen.com writers will be attending but if they do - I hope they'll write about it.

Even if most of you can't go to this weekend's Blogging While Brown conference, I think that you may be able to vicariously enjoy the conference enthusiasm by reading those blogs (listed above) this weekend.

I'm sure all the brown bloggers will have their laptops fired up and ready to report on the happenings.
