It is ironic that I learned of Dr. George Tiller’s death immediately after I got home from my Lutheran church service this morning. As a Christian, I understand the sanctity of the Church and I am deeply saddened that this special haven was tainted for Dr. Tiller’s family and friends.
My emotions on the situation are still very raw, so I will refrain from saying too much, but in this time of mourning, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to this man who acted as a last resort and life saver to many women.
Dr. Tiller was one of the few doctors in this country that performed late-term abortions and thusly, his life was filled with controversy and deadly threats. I’ve been told he even wore a bulletproof vest and drove a car with similar protection to the Presidential limousines. It is unfortunate that a common, working man was forced to take so many precautions just to simply live his daily life.
Regardless of where you stand on the abortion issue, I hope those of us on the internet can act with maturity and respect when commenting on related articles. Partaking in a pro-choice versus pro-life debate now will not benefit anyone and is disrespectful to his family.
I look forward to a day where our country can learn to co-exist peacefully. One of the most beautiful things about our society is the First Amendment and because of that, we are all entitled to our differing beliefs. However, murdering a man simply because you disagree with his beliefs and practices will never be justified.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Dr. Tiller’s family. I am honored that he chose to work in Kansas.
For those interested, there are candlelight vigils being held in Lawrence and Wichita tonight at 8:00 PM.

As a fellow Lutheran I'd like to thank you for your comments Kelly. You said it all so much better than ever I could have.
