Still you wonder
Who's cheatin' who an' who's bein' true?
Who don't even care anymore?
It makes you wonder
Who's doin' right by someone tonight,
An' whose car is parked next door.
- Charly McLain
What does a classic country song about infidelity and the general public’s view towards politicians have in common?
The American public ultimately does not trust the people we elect.
Especially now, Barack Obama is being expected to do the political equivalency of walking on water. I believe that it is only a matter of time before those who embraced “Impeach Bush” and turned to Obama will turn away. In advertising we call it “managing expectations”. I don’t see too much “managing expectations” with Obama, even with the recent tax escapades of Mr. Geithner and Mr. Daschle.
Let’s review what we know about Obama: he’s the President, he has a wife and two children, he’s human. Superhuman powers is not on the list.
What’s wrong with this picture?
When we elect someone we decry as a liar, a crook, or something else we find despicable, who are we passing judgment on? When we say “throw the bums out”, are we judging our elected officials? Or are we judging ourselves?
I’m a lot of things, but I’m no angel. I could not run for public office. Then again, there’s no one in my social circle who could run for office (well, except for one, and he’s a relative). Before passing judgment, I suggest taking a long look in the mirror.
Yes, yes, glass houses, the enemy is us, blah, blah, freaking blah. But there’s truth to the blah, blah, blah.
Who’s cheatin’ who? We’re cheating ourselves.

Perhaps my cognitive process has been anesthetized by the poised and coherent stream of words flowing from the President’s lips; unknowingly, I’m floating dreamlike in an Obama induced stupor. Somehow, through this fog of delusion, a small part of me hopes that just this one time, the mob rule mentality of our fast food instant gratification culture will subside long enough to trust his leadership faculty. If I were rational, I would hear the drums beating and see the wood being stacked on the pyre. It makes you wonder.
