You must see the movie Waltz With Bashir is an animated film about the director’s experience as an Israeli soldier during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon. Afflicted with amnesia, he can’t remember what happened during the war. Using himself as the main character he seeks out fellow veterans to trigger his memory
The movie is set to a soundtrack of classical waltzes, and I think 1980s techno beats.
The director is not analyzing the 1982 Lebanon War with some conclusion about which side was right and wrong. Rather it’s a view of the war through the eyes of a few Israelis who are trying to remember what happened and what it did to them. The director digs down deep into the minds of the soldiers using dreams, hallucinations and memories to allow the viewer to really understand what war does to those who fight in it.
The film confirmed what I observed last spring talking to former Israel soldiers when visiting Israel. Even though Israel has some of the toughest soldiers in the world, their commitment to fighting is full of moral conflict. They deem it necessary to protect their country, but regret the killing and devastation. It is an anti-war film, it raises issues about personal responsibility during war, but it won’t stop the fighting in the mid-east.
At the end of the film you will probably be devastated as I was. You might find it difficult to get out of your seat. But you must see it.
