Universal Healthcare: Will Kathleen Sebelius Be Our Leader?

By Pamela Jean
February 19, 2009

Two days ago, one unnamed source told the Washington Post,“We are vetting.” Now, according to the Reuters, Forbes, the Kansas City Star, and the New York Times, unnamed White House advisers are naming Kathleen Sebelius, Democratic governor of Kansas, as "the leading candidate" for the secretary of health and human services in the Obama cabinet. Evidently some other names are still under consideration but no other names are "leading" or have been made public.

Way to go, Governor! An official announcement from President Obama could come as early as next week. Governor Sebelius is scheduled to be in Washington D.C. from Saturday to Tuesday of next week, attending the National Governors' Association meeting there. Should the governor accept the cabinet post, she would be replaced as governor by Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson, the former chairman of the Kansas Republican Party who switched to the Democratic Party when he ran with Kathleen Sebelius in 2006.

Governor Sebelius has already received nods from noteworthy leaders in health care reform, including Rep. Pete Stark, Democrat of California and author of the Stark Bill, and Ronald Pollack, executive director of Families USA, an advocate of universal healthcare. Rep. Stark said, “All signs indicate that she would be a terrific choice.” Max Baucus, the leading proponent of health care reform in the Senate, hasn't weighed in publicly yet.

We will need bold, confident strides in health care reform. True universal healthcare cannot be achieved in small incremental steps. If you believe that you are up to the challenge of making the right strategic and seismic shifts needed in order to transform our "system" - we'll be behind you all the way. We'll support you and assist you every way we can! There is no greater goal than health care for all.

P.J., I'm going to take this argument in small incremental steps. For now, forget whether or not health care should be a right, but how are we going to pay for universal health care and give the middle-class tax relief like the President said he would? Obama just signed into law a bill with the price tag of $787B. This is nuts!

Ok, there's a lot there and it's going to take a while for me to go through because I do have a life outside of reading Everyday Citizen blogs. That aside, everyone knows there's a lot of people out there who need health coverage. Your stats above touch on that and there is no denying it. But the question up front is simple - how is universal health care going to be paid for? The U.S. government is going to need an unimaginable amount of money to pull it off. I feel you dodged the question because, either nobody is sure, or nobody right now wants to say the words "huge tax hikes".
I'll tell what, I can save a little time by passing on one blog, the John Edwards one.
I don't have much use for that guy!

P.J., I don't agree with #3). Not unless you meant to say, "the US government does not offer the worlds best health care coverage...", then I would agree. I've always been proud of the quality of our doctors, nurses, and hospitals here in the US. I have a hard time believing that we rank near the bottom in that department. And #5), I've never heard of anybody dieing from "lack of health care". Cancer and heart disease yes, but not that. A statistic like that one would have too much bias in it.
I'm trying to read more of your previous blogs on this topic, but there's so much that I have to admit that I've been doing some skimming. Usually when I read the last one or two paragraphs of a blog that I get to the nitty gritty of the authors intent and attitude. All the above stuff is full of a bunch of miserable little numerical facts and statistics plus Bush bashing.
