Getting your voice heard

By Jim Faris
February 25, 2009

I was reading in the Oskaloosa Independent the other day when I came across a letter to the editor that I had to share. This is a perfect example of what you SHOULDN'T do when you are running for office, especially for a small town race like McLouth City Council.

Hello again Dear Fellow Citizens of McLouth: You haven’t heard from me for quite awhile. One reason, surgery; two, changing meds; and three, probably the most important, I have not had the release from the Holy Spirit to talk about what is going on. Since the first of the year there have been several things that I could have reported on, but it would have been in anger and God has just said no. So I haven’t. There may or may not be rumors going around concerning the last council meeting. You may call or email me, the horse’s mouth, if you want to know anything. I will be glad to tell you the truth. My number is: 913-796-2005; my email is: mrsh0150@giantcomm.net. I am not a gossip person nor do I have anything to do with rumors. That’s why I said come to the ‘horse’s mouth’. AND I DO NOT HAVE AN AGENDA concerning any person or matter, on or in, the council meetings. I do have something to share this week and have the peace to do so. Please read the following slowly, pausing at punctuation marks and listening to what you are saying. It is important. There is a great message here and if you read it too fast you will miss it. This is from two books by the same author, Max Lucado. The first place I saw it was three years ago, in “Grace for the Moment, Volume 1,” date of Feb. 4. Mr. Lucado originally wrote it in his book called: “He Still Moves Stones.” I have read this many times this month.

God’s Help Is Near
The Lord is close to everyone who prays to him, to all who truly pray to him.
PSALM 145:18
Healing begins when we do something. Healing begins when we reach out. Healing starts when we take a step.
God’s help is near and always available, but it is only given to those who seek it. Nothing results from apathy....
God honors radical, risk-taking faith.
When arks are built, lives are saved. When soldiers march, Jerichos tumble. When staffs are raised, seas still open. When a lunch is shared, thousands are fed, and when a garment is touched---whether by the hand of an anemic woman in Galilee or by the prayers of a beggar in Bangladesh---Jesus stops.
He stops and responds.

Dear people, I have done something. I have reached out. I have taken steps. I have sought God’s help. I have definitely NOT been apathetical. I have taken radical, risk-taking faith. I have been doing this, as far as the council is concerned, for a good two years. I know in my heart that Jesus has stopped and He is responding.
I want you all to know my heart. When you really can do that, then you will know who and what I am. If you take the chance to get to know me you will find I am very real.
Please continue to keep me in your prayers. Call me, write me, please give yourself the chance to really get to know me.
Barbara Hasemeier,
McLouth

I'm all for enjoying your personal relationship with God and tell others about it, but when you are running for City Council, you need to put your religious views across to others in such a way that you don't seem really out there. Radical, risk-taking faith is what this country was founded on, however that can better be applied by showing guts and determination, that brings people over to your side.

Hasemeier was escorted out of the recent McLouth City Council meeting by police. She wanted to address the council but wasn't recognized when she burst out in the middle of the meeting. Hasemeier was then asked to not disrupt the meeting any further or else be asked to leave. She refused and was then escorted out.

You can have your voice be heard. Just always remember it is better to listen and find the right moment to speak allowing others to hear, then to shout a good point and no one listens.
