Turning point?

By Beth Boisvert
January 20, 2009

Diane Feinstein just said that future generations will look back on today as the turning point for real change. I hope she is right, and that Obama can really bring us lasting change. I worry, though, that his administration will bring good things...for four--or eight--years, but no longer. It will not be on his shoulders, but on ours, to ensure the real change happens and continues.

Beth, it is on our shoulders for sure. We cannot depend on a leader or even a handful of leaders to take us where we want to go. Our biggest mistake in the Bush years was in waiting for leaders to straighten themselves up or to focus on what we wanted them to focus on.

We need citizen noise in this country. We need to provide pressure and direction for our leaders - so that they rise to the top because they become loyal to what we want - rather than us waiting idly by for a leader to appear with an agenda we like.

This is our wakeup call. This is one thing that the baby boom generation understood - they made noise, they made it impossible for their government to ignore them. We must do the same!

BTW, I'm glad you are writing again. I missed you!
