Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land Video

By Melissa Tuckey
January 10, 2009

"We are currently in a conflict with the Palestinians.... engaging in a successful PR campaign is part of winning the conflict." Alon Pinkas, Consul General for Israel in New York.

"You can't defend yourself when you are militarily occupying somebody else's land, call it what you like, but it's not self-defense." Noam Chomsky.

What do you know about settlements, occupation, or colonization of Palestinian lands? What do you know about daily life in occupied territories? If you are the average US news consumer, the answer might be not very much. How do we make sense of the conflict in Gaza when we have no context?

The Film Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land looks at dehumanization of Palestinians in US news coverage.

Please watch this film and discuss it in the comments section below.

Melissa, I don't know how we humans can tolerate the attacks on a confined population that has no place to run or hide, or even any way to obtain food or medical supplies. It's like shooting bullets in the densely occupied dog runs at a human society kennel. Most of us would be appalled to know that a government treated dogs in this manner, yet, we tolerate even more cruel treatment of human beings. The only explanation is that we (our citizenry as a whole and largely even as individuals) have been influenced by the propaganda and have, in our consciences, somehow lowered our opinion of the Palestinian families as if they are less worthy than even dogs. It breaks my heart. Isn't this what happened to the Jews in WWII Germany? Thank you for sharing that excellent film.
