A call has sounded and President Obama leads the chorus for the next generation to find their way serve the country. Mayoral, city council, and school board elections in Kansas are now in full swing and there are two in the small town of Oskaloosa that have stood and asked to be counted for election.
Michael Reynolds 21, has lived in the community all his life so far and sees that this is his time to step up and make a difference. "I have lived here all of my life and I care so much for this town. I want to see it become better" Reynolds said. "I want to be the people's watch dog, making sure that money is going to where it should."
Jim Faris 25, grew up going to school in Oskaloosa and has been a resident for almost two years. "I may not have lived here all of my life, but I know the people that make up this town and I want to do my part to get things done" Faris said. "I want to be the big thinker. We need people on the council that see things for what they could be and figure out how to do it."
Both men are saying that they see a need for more city police, recycling, job growth, new affordable housing, all without heavy tax increases. "I want to see what else is coming down the pike. The new Dollar General is only the beginning of potential new business growth in Oskaloosa." Faris continued, "With new and bigger businesses moving in, we can create revenue through the taxes that are already in place for owning a business in Oskaloosa." Reynolds adds, "I have many ideas to create revenue, but I'm a details man. I want to take the big ideas and set them up step by step to where folks don't have to have a tax hike."
There are four men running for the three city council seats that are up for grabs. Jim Faris, Michael Reynolds, Mike Boyd, and Allen Wise. Wise and Boyd are running for re-election, election day is April 7.
