Dump the Post Day

By Mike Maggio
January 15, 2009

On Friday, January 16, the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) is calling for residents of the Washington DC area to gather in front of the Washington Post headquarters to protest their coverage of the Israeli war on Gaza and their silence regarding the numerous demonstrations that have taken place around the world to protest their disproportionate aggression.

For those of you who cannot make these protests, I am asking that they submit letters of protest to the editor of the Washington Post. Perhaps if we bombard them with letters (as the Israelis are bombarding the Palestinians with bombs), they will hear our cries and start doing their jobs.

The following is a letter I wrote this week to the Washington Post, a letter which, so far, they have refused to print.

Thanks for your vigilance.

In solidarity and peace,
Mike Maggio

I am amazed at the Post’s seemingly complicit silence regarding recent demonstrations against the Israeli aggression on Gaza that took place around the world over the weekend. Watching AlJazeera television on Sunday, I saw numerous demonstrations being held in Madrid, London, Rome, Egypt, Pakistan and, yes, Washington DC. Yet the Post said not one word, not even about the one that took place here in our own backyard.

I would like to know why there is such silence when millions of Americans oppose the Israeli operations against Gaza. Yes, Hamas is lobbing rockets against Israeli citizens but where in the discussion has the reason for these actions been stated? Where do we hear about how the Israelis have prevented food and medicine from getting into the Gaza Strip months before the Israelis decided to invade, causing hardship and misery for the civilian population the Israelis claim to care so much about? Are the Palestinians supposed to sit down and take it without complaint? Are they supposed to just sit around and suffer as they have suffered ever since being forced out of their homes in 1948?

When will the world take an unbiased view of this conflict? When will the Post start doing its job to inform the public about the realities of the Palestinian situation? Will it take another holocaust before the world wakes up only to repent after it’s too late?

Bob Hooper Author Profile Page:

Mike, if you haven't seen it, I encourage you to acquire a dvd "Life in Occupied Palestine: eyewitness stories & photos." The creator is a young (American) Jewish woman (I'm guessing "reform" or "conservative") who spent time in the West Bank, and with the Palestinians generally. You can learn more at www.AnnaInTheMiddleEast.com. My verdict: every American should watch it. Until there is a two-state solution, the situation, not only in Israel/Palestine but elsewhere, will only grow worse.
