Last week, a newspaper (HDN) contained a letter to the editor I could not believe. In fact I was a little shocked the paper would publish it -- since the message bordered on white supremacy. I know the paper is dedicated to being a voice for everyone, so I guess I can sort of accept this, but mind you letters like that make many people, "Christian Caucasians" included, extremely uncomfortable. For that reason, I will not refer to this person by name or city, nor cast aspersion upon their motives, but I do have a quarrel with their thinking.
Most of us realize that there is nothing about Christianity, or the Christian God, that promotes one race over another. Sure, the Old Testament was rather designed to promote Judaism, but Jews are not just Caucasian. There are white Jews, and black Jews and Arabic Jews and even Asian Jews. I am not talking about converts, either. Both Jewish faith and DNA studies reveal this to be true. So let's be clear. God is not shown to favor Jews, or any people, on the basis of race.
More importantly, Christians are of the New Testament and believe that in heaven there will be neither Jew nor Gentile, male nor female, neither will there be race or party, but "God will be all in all." So surely it brings discredit to the Christian faith to talk like America was ordained by God to be Caucasian or to be led exclusively by Caucasians.
Our own American Indians were here long before anyone else. There were also imported Asian workers on the West coast long before local ancestors ever came over. Does this make them and their descendants truer Americans than later immigrants? Many Hispanic families in California and the southwest settled here (and remained) in the 1500s. In colonial times, there were blacks, both slave and free who lived here as well.
So, if length of time in the area makes one family more American than another, then I guess our "old" turn-of-the-(20th)-century, late-coming families are the relative losers.
I want to say to the author, there is nothing in our Constitution that provides a test of race for the presidency. Are you now going to have a quarrel with the Constitution? Did you know Barack Obama studied and taught college level Constitution for 10 years? Maybe you can ask him. I think to know the Constitution is to love it. Obama certainly does. (Read his books.)
I think it helps to have the guidance of God. Obama absolutely values it. He even demonstrates some of the gifts of God: leadership, planning skills and clear thinking. Considering we will collapse as a nation continuing as we are, I am grateful we have Barack Obama as a sound alternative.
