Approximately 153.1 million Americans are now registered to vote. This is the largest number of Americans ever registered. A record 73.5% of citizens 18 or older are registered!
With 90% of the electorate still concerned that our country is seriously off track, citizens are engaging in the political process in greater numbers than ever before. Registering to vote was an important first step. Registration itself will not change our communities, our nation or our world!
We all must vote. Turnout is absolutely critical, in every location. Some of you live in a red states where the electoral votes are locked up by the red party. Your vote, even in those states, will still make a difference. The larger the Democratic vote, the greater the eventual mandate for Democratic values. Whatever you do, don't be swayed or fooled by all the news reports that claim Obama is comfortably ahead. He's not. Besides, if too many Obama supporters decide not to vote because they think Obama is already ahead, the non-votes will add up quickly. He could lose. Obama supporters can actually cause Obama to lose just by not voting.
Don't let that happen! Our future may depend upon the amount of energy you put into election day strategies. This is not the time to debate issues. This is the time to get everybody you can to the polls.
- Make sure that you vote.
- Talk to everyone you see, strangers and friends alike, ask them to please vote.
- Call up your friends and associates, as many as you possibly can, and urge, pressure and beg them to vote.
- If you run into people who don't know their polling places are, find out for them. This information is always available at your County Clerk or County Election Officer's office (listed in the phone book) and may also be online. Don't give up. Help them!
- If you discover people that don't have ways to get to their polling locations, help them! Offer to give them rides, find them rides, give them bus fare, or just walk with them.
- Keep up the pressure and the offers of help right up until 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 4th. Resist the urge to celebrate or watch the returns on T.V. before 7:00 PM. Instead, call people. Don't stop. Help people. Don't give up early. Encourage people at the polls. Don't stop! Be a part of the process right to the end at 7:00 PM.
While all of the above is the most critical, we also will need to protect the integrity of our elections. Right now, too many precincts are mismanaged and too many election officers are allowing problems to occur at polling locations. There's no excuse for long lines, long wait times, or registered voters not showing up on the rolls.
You can help protect the rights of voters while they are still at the polls, or take them back to the polls if they were unable to vote. Here's what you can do to have even more impact on November 4th:
- First, make sure that any voter who is experiencing problems actually gets to vote.
- If long lines are the problem, go to the polls and entertain people that are waiting in line. Give them encouragement. Ask them not to give up.
- If your local polling location looks foreboding to voters because police are positioned on the corner or because parking is limited, stand outside and welcome people to the polls. Make it look friendly. Talk to them in their cars and encourage them to park and come on in.
- While you are at the polls, if you learn that voters were dropped wrongly from the voter list, tell them they (as well as all Americans, all the time) have the absolute right to request provisional paper ballots and vote using those ballots. Every citizen has this right no matter what.
- If after you leave a polling location, you learn of voters who have left the polls because while they were there, they were not able to vote - encourage them to go back into the polls and demand provisional ballots. Take them back. Make them go! Explain to them that they were wronged and you all can work together to make it right. Tell them that democracy can be messy and isn't always easy - but, it's important that they demand to exercise their rights to vote. Tell them they have the right!
- Secondly, if you learn of anything that may be disenfranchising voters, suppressing votes or discouraging any citizens from voting, for any reason, report it using any one of the following methods. You don't have to use all methods, if you are in a hurry. Just pick a reporting method that's convenient for you and keep moving.
- Make a report by calling 866-OUR-VOTE, Election Protection's toll-free hotline.
- Make a report by giving information online right here.
- Make a video of any voter's comments regarding problems the voter experienced. If you get video footage, upload your videos here.
- Use your Twitter account to report any and all problems at the polls, too. Here's how to tweet about voter suppression.
- Blog about what you saw at the polls!
Deliberate voter suppression is a real problem. Long lines have been discouraging to many voters, particularly the elderly, the disabled and individuals who have a limited amount of time to spend at the polls.
Not all of the voting machines are trustworthy. The electronic machines without printouts for individual voter receipts are the most susceptible to fraud because the vote counting occurs in secret. Also, in many locations, machines are not able to meet demand and some are breaking down. For more information about voting rights, visit The Civil Rights Coalition.
It's important to: 1) submit your own vote first, 2) get as many other individuals to the polls as possible, 3) help voters at the polls to make sure that they are actually able to vote when they get there, and 4) report any problems you learn about.
What you do tomorrow to help voters to vote may help us to save all of our lives.
Every little bit helps. Just do it!

Point one: The message to vote is critical - the world (unfortunately) depends on our ability to use democracy to fullest.
Point two: It's so sad, with all our technology, that we are having such problems with voting - from the registrars to the machines to those who would wish to suppress the vote.

Thanks for your clarity--
I agree with the poster above, it is ridiculous to be having so many problems with our voting systems.
Be vigilant, all!!!
