The Call

By Carter Maddox
November 2, 2008

James Dobson was in the house today. And by "the house," I mean in godless California.

The Focus on the Family leader made the pilgrimage to the Left Coast to join other evangelical Christians at a rally called "The Call" in San Diego. I was hoping they'd be closer to San Fran so that I could join in the fun, but I had to make do with Rex Wockner's excellent blog coverage.

I've been camped out in data entry land at the No On Prop 8 campaign offices for the past two days and it's a world away from the compassion-less Dobson crowd. I'll take an office packed full of gays any day!

We had a special treat from Gavin Newsom at the campaign office today. That guy is something else -- had an emotional moment while talking about Prop 8. It's nice to see a mayor take human rights so seriously.

The video's shaky and the audio's atrocious, but this is what a campaign looks like when people really believe in the cause. You get choked up. You get inspired. Above all, you develop community. After 12 hours of setting up computer banks, doing data entry, meeting interesting people, and doing more data entry, I went to get a cookie with a nice couple at Hot Cookie. I had never been so excited about cookies -- it was a great way to end the night.

Carter,

I'm so glad you gave us an update and it was just what I was hoping for - an inside look, on the ground of what it's like to join an emergency ad hoc citizen action group! I'm excited to see the inside of the "get out the vote" to oppose Proposition 8. I'm honored that one of our own has made the effort to go to California and roll up her sleeves. I'm grateful you are blogging about it. We'll be on the edge of our seats hoping for more - and praying that the Proposition fails.
