We were shopping in Wal-Mart last Saturday morning - trying to get out of the store as quickly as possible - when an older man blocking the aisle started talking with a mother and her daughter. I moved out of their way, but Jayson stayed behind for a minute or two, then caught up with me.
"I can't believe that guy - he really hates Obama. He said that somebody should kill Obama."
Later that afternoon, I was touring a farm in southwest Ellis County and met up with some folks that I know. We started talking about the election, and I discovered that one of my acquaintances is a republican. So I asked The Question: Will she vote for McCain?
"Absolutely. Obama scares me."
I pressed her. Why does Obama scare her? She couldn't answer the question - just a lot of "well, you know" and "it's really hard to say," so I asked if his race scared her. "Oh, no. No, no."
These conversations aren't isolated to Ellis County, Kansas. I've heard news interviews with local voters from key states, including Indiana, Pennsylvania and Florida, and one phrase keeps popping up - Obama Scares Me.
Why does Barack Obama scare people? And more importantly, why aren't more people scared of John "McNasty" McCain or Sarah "Barracuda" Palin?
