We Are News: How the Mainstream Press Covered Us

By Pamela Jean
September 5, 2008

The traditional press took great interest in the bloggers that received press credentials for the convention. One of our correspondents, Darrell Hamlin, probably ended up in about 20 different videos shots by different media crews. Every time I looked over at where he was sitting in the Big Tent, its seemed to me that a new producer from some media outlet was filming him as he typed away on his laptop. We'll never know how many different television clips showed our EverydayCitizen bloggers working. We felt a little like goldfish in a bowl.

That said, it was very fascinating to observe the mainstream press "cover" us while we "covered" the convention. They covered us for good reason. We were indeed breaking new ground. We were on their turf. We were redefining "freedom of the press." Our blog, Everyday Citizen, made historic news at the Democratic National Convention in Denver! Check out these interesting articles highlighting our bloggers and their involvement in the Convention...

  1. NPR Interview with Bloggers, including a blogger from EverydayCitizen.com
  2. Bloggers play large role at convention, from the Topeka-Capital Journal (Topeka, Kansas)
  3. Hays-based blog chosen to represent Kansas at Democratic National Convention, from the Lawrence Journal World (Lawrence, Kansas)
  4. Area writers to blog from convention, from the Hays Daily News

These next links don't include EverydayCitizen specifically (like the ones above) but they do give insight into the process from other bloggers.

(Janet Morrison, you are in the background of this first video of the bloggers lounge at Pepsi, so look for yourself!)

These are press releases from the DNC and blog posts from EC that more fully explain the role of the bloggers in this year's convention:

  2. DNC Chairman Governor Dean Announces Blogs Selected For 2008 Democratic National Convention 'State Blogger Corps', from the Democratic National Convention Committee
  3. Embedded with the Delegates at Democratic National Convention! from EverydayCitizen Press Release
  4. Bloggers Assume Their Rightful Roles in Political Processes, from EverydayCitizen.com
  5. This Determined Group of Bloggers Said, 'Yes, We Can!' - from EverydayCitizen.com
