Voter Registration for Homeless and Low Income Voters

By Larry James
August 4, 2008

Since equal access to the right to vote is a crucial part of maintaining a true democracy, nonprofits and service agencies nationwide will dedicate the week of September 21-27, 2008 towards registering homeless and low-income individuals to vote. For those unable to conduct voter registration drives, the week can also be used to educate community members on the upcoming general election.

Low income people face several challenges to voting: less-flexible jobs that may not allow time off for voting, transportation impediments that may make getting to the polls more difficult, and a greater likelihood of misinformation about their rights as voters that may make people shy away from voting.

We hope you will unite with us in this historic week by joining us on a national conference call on Wednesday August 6 at 3:00 pm ET to discuss the many ways you and your friends, group, church or organization can get involved. You can access this call online here and/or by telephone by dialing 800-377-8846, access code 15392836#. You will be able to click on a link to access the call via the web also.

Here's to and for all of you who care about low income folks (commonly referred to as "the poor"), as well as our homeless neighbors. I hope you'll be able to get involved in this important call that will last only one hour.

Another important election year is approaching and we hope you will join us in ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. The National Coalition for the Homeless, the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, and the National Low Income Housing Coalition are honored to invite you to participate in National Homeless & Low Income Voter Registration Week on September 21-27, 2008 by hosting a voter registration drive or promoting voter education and participation.
