This Determined Group of Bloggers Said, 'Yes, We Can!'

By Pamela Jean
August 22, 2008

What do Ally, Shala, Sarah, John, Janet, Denise, Darrell, Dawne, Henry, Liz (who doesn't have a home page yet), Lucy and Pam (yours truly) all have in common? We are all blogging right here at this website from Denver next week.

The Democratic National Convention is just right around the corner (and 300 or 600 miles away for some, more or less for others) and I'm starting to get absolutely beside myself with excitement! As you may (or may not) already know, eight or eleven, or more (I really lose count sometimes) of our very own EverydayCitizen.com writers are attending these phenomenally historic events in Denver. All of us have agreed to take the time, during the convention, to give you our individual perspectives on the proceedings by blogging about it all - right here at this website! Right here!

Who's going, you ask? Well, let's see. Among us, we have two writers who have full media credentials through the Press Gallery. We have one writer (me) who is credentialed as a State Blogger and will be embedding with delegates on the convention floor and at other events. Three other of our Everyday Citizen writers have varying levels of Media Credentials that will allow them access to media workrooms, concourses, parking lots, tents, caucuses and meetings.

On top of all that, still some others in our group of EverydayCitizen writers are actual delegates! That's right. We have three delegates and one delegate alternate. We even have a spouse of a delegate! As the latter individual pointed out to me, while some of us are happily "embedding" with the delegates on the convention floor, he'll be actually "embedding" (happily we hope) with his real delegate at night.

So, who is actually going? I know you want to know! So, please, now, allow me to introduce our Everyday Citizen Convention writers to you!

Shala Mills will be writing at Everyday Citizen while she's in Denver. She's brand new at our site (and we are so thrilled she joined us). This is going to be a real treat because Shala is completely new to blogging and will christen her inaugural blogs right from the Democratic National Convention. Shala is also a delegate from Kansas. No, I don't know what she'll share with us in her blog from the Convention. I do know this though - she'll write some stuff. And, it will be very cool. I simply cannot wait. I'm so excited about it!

We have other delegates too. John Petty is a Clinton delegate from Colorado and he'll be writing from Denver. Although he's a delegate with full access to the floor and proceedings, he'll have some challenges finding Internet connectivity in the Pepsi Center. That's where our EverydayCitizen press passes will come in handy. With EC Blogger Passes, all of our writers can access the exact same Media Workrooms that traditional media use. All those rooms have hardwired Internet ports. I can't wait to see what John has to say when he sneaks away from his Colorado delegation, hooks up his laptop and posts a blog here! John's been a blogger with us for awhile. He's a salt-of-the-earth Democrat's Democrat. Seeing this particular Convention through John's eyes will be a real treat for all of us. We're honored that you'll give us your perspectives, John!

Kansas delegate, Denise Cassells, is looking forward to writing with us from the Convention too. She'll be using an EverydayCitizen Big Tent ticket so we'll see her plugging in on Wynkoop, juicing up her equipment (laptop, camera, etc.). Denise is a great conversationalist and a lively talker. I predict her blogs from the convention will be lively too. Denise, what will you write about? This is so exciting! The mystery and anticipation of it all!

We're thrilled that Sarah Burris will be at the Convention too. I think that it's a safe bet to guess that Sarah will tell us about the power of youth at this convention. She always does a great job of highlighting the phenomenal participation of the younger voters in this year's campaigns. She'll find the cool youthful activities and tell us all about them. Sarah also has a delightful sense of humor. I expect that she will use her camera and her blogs to show us the lighter side of things too. (Sarah, I know you are reading this! Tell us what you will be writing about! What are your plans?)

Zola Jones has to stay behind this year to make sure her sons have a successful first week in school, so Lucy Belnora has agreed to take Zola's place. Lucy has taken an admirable interest in the economy and the sub-prime crisis, so we'll all be hoping that she uncovers some economic good news while she's in Denver. She's a very serious minded person. So, expecting to hear about the litany of campaign issues she'll track down for her readers here, I asked Lucy what she thinks she'll be writing about next week.

Without hesitation, Lucy offered me this answer (verbatim), "Pam, I've heard that people wear funny hats at political conventions. I'd really like to offer a gallery of photographs of all the funny hats." Well, folks, even our oh-so-serious Lucy is getting giddy about blogging from Denver. I'm telling you, this is going to be fun.

I just learned today that Ally Klimkoski will be able to attend the Convention as well. Ally, like Sarah, has a special interest in empowering younger voters. Ally also is a faith-based politico. So, really, I'm not sure if her blogs will focus on faith or youth. The cool thing is that Ally will be in Denver! We'll just have to see what she'll choose to write about.

Darrell Hamlin will be writing from the Convention. I know Darrell has a great writing style and I enjoy his takes on many subjects. I imagine that Darrell will be fascinated and captivated by many topics while he's at the Convention, so I'll be sitting on the edge of my (convention floor) seat happily anticipating his blog posts, too. I might even get to watch him write from his comfortable chair in the Big Tent.

Henry Schwaller had planned to be at the Convention all week, but life got in his way a little. So Henry will only attend on Thursday. Still, though, he's promised to blog that and even blog a little before he heads to Denver.

We've added a new Convention blogger in Henry's place - Dawne Leiker. Dawne had already planned to "cover" the Convention with a group of journalism students from her university, but had not attained any passes. We were able to offer Dawne some Media Credentials from Everyday Citizen. Now, she'll be hanging where the real action is. Dawne says she is a radical-in-training. She'll be in good company in Denver. I can't wait to read what she writes.

Janet Morrison, my personal community organizing hero, is also blogging with us from Denver. Janet is an inspiration in working to eradicate poverty and she is a champion for racial reconciliation. She's already such a prolific writer and an accomplished photographer. I know that Janet's been spending every evening this week signing up for every single event that seems interesting to her (hundreds of things, I think). She's young and has lots of energy (emanating from her martial arts workouts, I'm sure) - so, when I catch glimpses of Janet in Denver, I think I might only get flashes of her in a blur of perpetual motion. Therefore, though she and I are staying at the same hotel, I'll probably be just like all of you and have to catch up on her activities by reading her blogs here! Janet, you will share your photos with us, too, won't you? I'm telling you, if she does share her photographs, we are all in for some real visual treats.

Janet's friend and activist, Liz Cedillo-Pereira, is a tireless advocate for Latino rights and immigration reform. Plus, she'll be a "delegate alternate" at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Liz is such a new member of our EverydayCitizen team that we don't even have a home page set up for her yet. But - I promise - it won't keep her from blogging while she's at the convention. We'll get her set up in time!

And, finally, there's me. My thing is going to be photographs and videos. I believe that a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm taking my good camera with me (my nifty Nikon d60).

Monday through Thursday, I'll begin each of my days (yawningly but excitedly) by attending the Kansas Delegate Breakfast at 7:00 AM. There, I'm likely to get lots of good pictures of Kansas delegates with sleep in their eyes. If the group has a good speaker, I'll put together a few minutes of video for you.

After breakfast, I'll head to downtown Denver where each day I pick up my daily packet of Press Credentials for the whole group. Since these must be promptly distributed to the other EverydayCitizen writers, we will all meet up at the Big Tent.

The Big Tent is a cool place just for activists and bloggers. It sits right in the center of things, on Wynkoop. They'll have smoothies, free massages, lunch, dinner, panel discussions and gavel-to-gavel on-screen coverage of the convention. What the Big Tent has that I like the most is - wifi Internet connectivity for uploading my photos and blogs - and, electricity for recharging my camera and laptop. Off and on, I'll be returning to the Big Tent to either refuel my body or my equipment.

Afternoons are caucus time. I'll make it to the Rural Caucus one day, the Faith Caucus and another time to the Women's Caucus. I really want to go to the African American Caucus too. From about 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, I'll be at the Pepsi Center, off and on. That's where the "real" convention happens.

The DNCC is setting me up with a special blogging workspace right on the delegation floor! Is that cool or what? I'll have Internet connectivity (hardwired) and electricity (for refueling my stuff) right at my seat! With all that wiring, I'll be able to upload pictures to you almost instantly. You'll get it as soon as it happens.

It took a heck of lot of work to secure all the logistical arrangements, the tickets to events, the press passes and the lodgings.

At this point, most of us are packed and organized. The others have packed their elegant casual outfits (and me, my jeans). All of us are armed with laptops and each other's cell phone numbers. We have maps and schedules.

Yes, we are. We are going to Denver to make history!

I hope you'll join in the fun with us right here.

Pam,

Congratulations on being selected to blog from the convention floor. I hope you have a great time in Denver. I'm really interested to learn how well Gov. Sebelius is received.
