Rhetoric and Showmanship

By Dawne Leiker
August 28, 2008

Bill Clinton rocked the crowd at the Democratic convention last night. His presence on stage set the crowd wild.

I would never have thought that would be possible nine years ago when he was impeached, and became somewhat of an embarrassment to the Democratic party.

This is a testament to the disillusionment of the last eight years. Democrats are nostalgic for the prosperity of the 1990’s and are pinning their hopes on the fact that Bill and Hillary have undeniably lent their support to Barack Obama.

We’ve heard some persuasive words at the Democratic National Convention. We’ve seen lots of slick signs and heard some awesome theme music. Delegates have been very prompt in raising their signs at the orchestrated times.

Tonight will be the big show. Seventy-five thousand people will turn out to rally the troops for the Obama campaign. It promises to be a historic event.

But the real work begins tomorrow. Tomorrow the party must replace theatrics with real substance. This will be a close race. The winner won’t be determined by whoever throws the greatest party. The winner will be determined by the candidate with the best answers to our most pressing issues.

Hi, Dawne. I lived in Russia while Clinton was President, and let me tell you--he sure made it a lot easier to be an American abroad. The people loved him. They were very puzzled by the whole impeachment business then raging in the USA. "If you don't want him," one of my Russian friends told me, "we'll take him. He can be Russia's President!" Another said, "If Clinton's love affairs are America's only problems, they should come over here and see what REAL problems are."

Unfortunately, we didn't have to do that to find out. All we had to do was elect Bush.
