The News Hour just brought in press releases to the bloggers sitting in the Pepsi Center room to tell us about an interview they just finished with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin who tells the News hour that he is prepared to evacuate New Orleans should hurricane Gustav appear headed for landfall above a category 2.
"I'm very concerned. In fact, I will be cutting this trip off tonight and going back to New Orleans to start to manage the process of determining whether we need to evacuate the city or how do we deal with the latest threat."
"Unfortunately all the models right now- we've looked at three or four of them. They update them every couple of hours - they all point toward New Orleans, so that's an unfortunate development. It's going to be a Category 3 storm at least, which is a pretty powerful storm. This will be the first real test we'll have of the federally rebuilt levees."
Nagin later says that they are all ready to ensure everyone is safe and even if the federal government fails the state and city are prepared to help and do the right thing.
"We've changed our approach to evacuations. Prior to Katrina and during Katrina, we had a shelter of last resort -- the Superdome and the Convention Center. We no longer have that so anything above a category 2 storm we're evacuating everybody out of the city and we have buses, trains and planes lined up to accomplish that, and we've tested the system. We've practiced it, and we're ready to implement it."

That is news of concern for sure. My thoughts are with the city of New Orleans.
