From print to blog

By Dawne Leiker
August 26, 2008

As one who’s only been blogging for a little over two weeks, it’s an overwhelming experience for me to be rubbing elbows with some of the biggest and most prolific bloggers in the country here at the DNC.

I’ve spent the last 18 years selling print media advertising, and touting the stellar attributes of a community newspaper. The last few years, I had struggled as an ad rep to bring my advertisers online.

Traditional media has been my life, so the idea of self-publication through blogging has been an idea that I’ve approached with some level of fear. Like many, I envisioned bloggers as trolls that enjoyed slinging mud from the comfort of their mother’s basement.

I’m finding out that the bloggers covering the DNC are the antithesis of my preconceived notions. These people are engaged activists with a vision of a world that can be changed through their online engagement of the compelling issues of our day.

We’ve been here in Denver only two days, but I have met some of the most driven individuals I have ever met in my life. They aren’t here for the free beer and salsa in the blogger’s tent. They are here to make sure that the stories get told....the stories that traditional media have failed to tell. The stories that engage and disturb their readers. The stories that are changing the meaning of the word journalism.
