The Economy Should Work For Us, and We for the Economy

By Donald Betts
July 31, 2008

I am pleased to be back here to visit my friends on Everyday Citizen. As I speak to citizens all over the Fourth Congressional district in Kansas, I'm amazed at how people are ready to get involved and take a stand for our economic future.

Whether it be in towns like Howard, Sedan, and Eureka, or in cities like Wichita, people are ready for a change. Partisan bickering, political rhetoric and wedge issues have diverted us from our true mission. A mission that would enhance the quality of life for all Americans, by regenerating a vibrant economy that supports a proper healthcare and education system.

If we are to get away from our dependence on foreign oil, it is imperative that we work together to conserve, and create alternative energy sources for the future. T. Boone Pickens said it best: "We have walked into a trap." We must support alternatives like wind, natural gas, solar, and biofuels because we can not just dig our way out of this crisis. Our blank-check policy with foreign oil has driven us into an economic crisis. As the next Congressman for the 4th District of Kansas, I will work to create innovative ways that provide a balance to our energy needs.

The economic picture is particularly daunting for the everyday citizen. Big Oil's profits no longer border on the obscene. They ARE obscene!

Big Oil has crossed the threshold into their all-time largest profit margins this quarter, while the cost of this production has been passed on to the American consumer in the form of $4-per-gallon prices. And while these prices have been swallowed in the past weeks, we must look to the future. We must make long-term plans.

While President Bush and his congressional allies have given $92 Billion dollars in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans, and cuts to the five largest oil companies, the American people struggle to pay their mortgage. Our National Debt is $9.3 trillion dollars and growing, and the shrinking middle class, the farmer and the everyday taxpaying citizen will have to foot the bill. Greedy mortgage companies have created a crisis that has taken a devastating toll on the lives of fellow Americans. In the time it has taken me to write this blog, 143 American families will lose their homes, while greedy politicians are more concerned about satisfying special interests and getting reelected. They fail to take into account that this government was founded on "WE THE PEOPLE."

In order to create jobs in this country, we must elect leaders who will not "sell out" our best industries and our national security to foreign governments. It is painful enough that private enterprise has outsourced jobs to companies overseas, but defense contracts are where we draw the line. I will continue to support American jobs by promoting "Made in America," "Built in America" and "Manufactured in America". We must create and protect American jobs. It is imperative that we protect the American farmer, and open channels so they can do business with companies abroad. We can not escape the ebbing tide of a global economy, so we must ensure that American goods are the best in the world. We must ensure that our citizens are able to compete in the global market.

I am deeply concerned about the future of our country. I'm ready to speak for what is right and for all Americans - not just the privileged few. Let's change the course together.

Walden P. Author Profile Page:

The times of greatest peace are the times of greatest prosperity. There is a direct link between the wealth of a citizenry and the level of statesmanship. And it is simple.

The nation with the strongest economy now holds all the chips. Not only can they buy their own security into the envy of all war-mongering nations and dictators, but they also retain the most to keep. It is in a nation's best interest, strategically and economically, to hold the gold.

Sen. Betts understands the rules of the physical universe we occupy. Rep. Tiahrt does not, has not, and will not. It's the economy, stupid. It's the economy, Rep. Tiahrt.
