My Political Dream Team

By Randy Leer
June 28, 2008

I spent some time thinking about this so I thought it would be an interesting article. Also, if I end up being right I want it documented for bragging rights.... So here it is. The next Executive Branch that will fix the country.

President Barrack Obama. I'm not going to explain this here because it's not necessary for this article.

Vice President Jim Webb. I think this guy has the rocks to be a firm Vice President / President of the Senate. Also, it is hard for Obama to pick a better representative of the Veteran and Military demographic. This man has a son who has served in Iraq and may still be there. Being a veteran himself, he carried his son's "seasoned" combat boots with him on the campaign trail. He has given the Democratic response to the State of the Union address and is a complete package and, in my opinion, ideal for Obama as a running mate.

Secretary of State Joe Biden. A long-time member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, Senator Biden has made an important impact influencing critical situations at the level of the U.N. and influencing Presidential Policy in the Clinton Administration.

Because Secretary Biden will need help, I call for Bill Clinton to head up a task force under the State Department to tour the world and meet with leaders to let them know we are open for diplomatic business again. I would also like to see Jimmy Carter and perhaps Justice O'Connor on this task force as well.

Secretary of the Treasury. I haven't decided this one for sure but I am leaning towards Bill Richardson. He serves as Governor of one of the poorest states but has accomplished many environmental and health care goals that we need to have for America. We are buried in debt thanks to the Bush administration and we need to stretch every penny.

Secretary of Defense Wesley Clark. Part of Bush's seemingly endless stupidity was putting a former, and well respected, general in the position of Secretary of State and putting a greedy entrepreneur with no moral grounding as Defense Secretary. We need someone with experience, knowledge, judgment and the willingness to make moral objections, to lead this sector if we are going to clean up the numerous quagmires that have become our national defense. This man has all those great qualities and more.

Attorney General John Edwards. A good hearted, morally grounded attorney on a crusade for the little man in America, This should be a move to put the oil companies, defense contractors and the out-going administration all on their heals with chills going down their spines.

Secretary of Agriculture Kathleen Sebelius. While I would take great pride in seeing her as Vice President I feel like she needs at least a little time on Capitol Hill. She has served us Kansans with distinction and I know she will do the same for America in this position.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Hillary Clinton. Her crusades for health care and welfare reform for the little people in America makes an ideal position for her. The immediate need for universal health care will elevate the importance of this position and her skills and leadership will only elevate it more by achieving success for the struggling American.

Lastly, but still very Important, I am split on whether this man would be more valuable as the Secretary of Energy or heading the Environmental Protection Agency. Then man I am talking about is the winner of the Nobel Prize for Science, Al Gore. I don't need to explain why. I only need to decide where he can do his best work without other issues wasting his time.

This is the dream team that I believe will fix America. Can you imagine all these great Americans on the same team? It would be the complete opposite of the Bush Administration. As big of a failure as his administration has been, the Obama Administration would be a complete turn around.

Really love this post, Randy. What I am most struck by is the depth of energy and talent that will be available to Obama for the tasks ahead. All of your choices are interesting and provocative; I like the way you are thinking about the roles and the people. I am most pleased that you -- and many other people I have read or heard lately -- have focused in on John Edwards at Justice. For precisely the reasons you set out: we need someone in there who will take the fight to the lawbreakers and swindlers in the corporate arena, rather than using the power of the department to thwart inquiry into abuses of government power while politicizing the ranks.
