Isn't it interesting how we choose specific laws or commandments, in the Old Testament, to hammer those who don't have proper life styles to suit us. We ignore those commandments and laws that might require us to change our ways.
The following is an excerpt taken from a Church World Service email, I received, urging me to encourage my Senators to back the bill. It has already passed in the House.
Faith reflection: "Every seventh year you shall grant a remission of debts," Deuteronomy 15: 1; "Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants; it shall be a jubilee for you." Leviticus 25: 10;The Hebrew Scriptures talk to us about living in right relationship with God, the human community, and all of creation. One of the most profound practices is the observance of Jubilee, a time when slaves are set free, debts are forgiven, and land lost through debt is returned to its original owners. These are actions meant to restore the community to wholeness. While the full Jubilee liberation was set for a 50-year cycle, freedom for slaves, debt cancellation and rest for the soil were commanded for every seven years.
The Jubilee Act gives us an opportunity to apply the practice of Jubilee debt cancellation to our own time and world.
There is no record indicating this particular command was ever carried out in full.
There is record of the religious leaders figuring out all kinds of ways to excuse themselves and others from carrying it out. Man's cunning and greed is just a built in nature that appears to be beyond our ability to completely overcome.
Do you suppose that is why God designed the plan of salvation? We all are, or can be, beneficiaries of God's Grace. We all, because of our human nature, sometimes take advantage of His Grace. (We are promised unlimited forgiveness.) Because no one else seems to obey certain laws, does that excuse me?
The business world designed the Corporate structure for business. This serves to spread the risk. It absolves any one stockholder of personal legal responsibility for the actions of the Corporate Board of Directors. It is a good business plan and creates a very beneficial atmosphere to operate efficiently and profitably. "The Corporation" is an artificial entity and has no conscience, therefore it operates without emotion. The conscience and emotion is only represented by the stockholders and officers.
It is the individual stockholders and officers responsibility to hold "The Corporation" to moral and ethical practices. That is not easy to do. We can't ignore economics or the business goes bankrupt. We can't ignore government regulations, even if those regulations that limit meeting specific individual needs.
Our government operates like a giant corporation and no one individual is held accountable if the corporation fails to meet our standards of morals or ethics. We can hide behind the structure and take advantage of our fellow man, when it benefits our greed. After all, it wasn't me that left the loop hole or failed to install adequate enforcement tools.
Sad to say, many, if not most, of our religious groups, Christian or otherwise, operate the same way. We expect the top hierachial leadership to make all the ethical and moral decisions and we are free to pick and choose which ones we follow. Or, in the case of those groups who claim 'local autonomy', we excuse individual responsibility for the group's action, because we operate as a democracy, therefore, I'm not responsible for the majority decisions.
How do we change the world? How do we establish liberty and justice for all? How do we provide health care, nutrition, and shelter for all human beings? How do we, if this is what you think, make everyone responsible for their own welfare? Before we demand or expect that, we must give them equal footing and equal start, just like we have had.
We cannot by decree or mandate do it. It isn't working in the middle east and it hasn't worked in the past, according to recorded history.
It is a long and difficult road or trip to master. It begins with me and you. Regardless of our religious affiliation, religiosity will not change the world.
When we each one reach out and embrace another — When we each one give a portion of what we have to another who has none — When we each one forget our pride and ask assistance from our fellowman — When we each one honor freedom of choice to our fellowman — When we each one act righteously (as it is described in the Christian's Bible) — Then and only then will the world begin to change.
The road may extend well beyond any of our lives, but that doesn't excuse any of us from beginning the journey.
