Governor Sebelius signed a bill yesterday legalizing machine guns, automatic weapons, sawed-off shotguns and silencers beginning July 1. This bill overturns a 75 year old ban on the sale of machine guns in Kansas, and appears to contradict the governor's earlier stance on gun control.
In announcing her action, Sebelius didn’t elaborate on her reasons for signing the bill. Her past actions on gun issues had raised questions about whether she would. But if you're afraid that your quiet, reserved neighbor who always keeps to himself now has a chance to express his inner Rambo, Kansas Senator Phil Journey from Haysville says not to worry...In 2006, she vetoed a bill allowing qualified Kansans to carry concealed handguns, only to see the Legislature override her. Last year, she rejected a bill preventing local governments from imposing additional restrictions on concealed guns, and legislators once again nullified her veto.
“I can’t even afford them,” said Sen. Phil Journey, a Haysville Republican who is a strong gun-rights advocate and championed the bill. “There may be some very happy collectors who have significant disposable income.”Supporters believe the bill will benefit mostly collectors because machine guns typically cost at least $20,000. Also, anyone wanting to own such weapons must undergo two federal background checks.
Still, some might question the timing of this. With record gas prices and rumors of potential food shortages, is this really what Kansans need?

I don't know why she signed that gun bill - but, I will tell you that many, many Americans are very proud of the Governor of Kansas for:
1) Denying the permit to expand the coal plant in Holcomb,
2) Vetoing the first bill the Kansas legislature sent her that would allow construction of the plant, and,
3) Vetoing the second bill (just last week) that the state house sent to her that would again allow the construction of the coal plants.
Your governor is phenomenal in her cutting edge understanding of her role as leader in the protection of future generations from the poisoning of our atmosphere with carbon dioxide, and, the poisoning of our water supplies with mercury.
This being Earth Day, I just have to say that your Governor Sebelius is my hero.
