All right, let me get this one straight. The New York Times endorses McCain for the Republican nomination and then runs an allegedly unsubstantiated, front-page article suggesting his staffers cautioned him years ago about the appearance of impropriety with a lobbyist.
According to many analysts, the conservative base in America raced with "breathtaking" speed to consolidate behind McCain. How dare that dreaded liberal rag attack one of ours, even if we don't like him very much? Everyone knows the American press is liberal, right?
If I were suspicious, I might just accuse the NYT of intentionally sowing the seeds of unity among the right by running that story. If I supported McCain, I might just thank the Times that this story just happened to fit the print. If I were perceptive, I might just reconsider that old chestnut about our liberal press.
