'Can't We All Just Get Along?' Let the Nomination Play Out!

By Levi Henry
March 10, 2008

While I had intended to do more respectable blogging for my first entry for EverydayCitizen, especially in regards to energy, environment, agriculture and rural development, I am finding myself writing on the continued fight, still, in Kansas between Clinton and Obama supporters.

In order to clear the air on any biases, I am and have been a Barack Obama supporter, activist and volunteer since before the beginning. He is my generation's greatest opportunity for a different future. However, this personal commentary aside, I will support and volunteer for Sen. Clinton if she is crowned by the Party's nomination.

Being a Kansan, we have held our caucuses on Super Fat Tuesday in February. Obama won in Kansas overwhelmingly by a 75-25 break-down, give or take a few points. However, ironically, I am finding that more and more Kansas Democrats are split between Clinton and Obama and still feuding this out over dinners, telephone conversations, racquetball (maybe in Johnson or Douglas Counties???) and even in bars over pitchers of beers and a game of pool (the other 103 counties and can you say emergency room?).

My perspective at this point is that being somewhat otherwise occupied with my career, personal life (a new marriage), and, of course, my two wonderful English Pointers that destroy everything in sight, as a Kansan, I have had my say in this matter. At this point, if I want to continue to have my say, then I should be traveling to Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Indiana, N. Carolina, and Guam (if only I had the greenbacks) for a nice vacation (just not a lot of electoral votes -- four (4) to be precise). Otherwise, if you are a Democrat in a state that has submitted its primary or caucus results, such as Kansas, and you are not otherwise involved in a campaign by traveling to these other states, please, for the love of God, do not divorce your spouses, disown and/or disinherit your children (especially you Mother), and/or poison the pets of your neighbors who support the other candidate (or the, while a bit more mild, leaving a poopie present).

As a final plea, especially to my Mother, Mother-in-Law (who may have disinherited me for other reasons, but I am a bit thankful for that one), my Mother's partner, and even the mailman (I still hope my dogs bite you, though), I urge you stop fighting -- I will change my position if and when Senator Clinton receives the nomination.

Levi, first welcome to EC!
Secondly, thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. It's such a breath of fresh air.

I for one have not taken a side in the Obama/Clinton race because Edwards and Kucinich were my favorites. I decided long ago that no matter who won the nomination in the Democratic party this year that I'd get behind them. Mainly because I care about the same issues that the Dems care about - universal healthcare, social justice, economic justice etc.

However, I am so tired of all the mean spirited things that are being said by Dems about one or both of the frontrunners.

We do need to talk about unity. And, the way to unity is to STOP the personal attacks and talk about the issues and what we have in common.

Your post is great. Your bio is even more impressive.
