Mistress, Schmistress

By Alice Pfeifer
February 23, 2008

Come on. I could hardly care less what two consenting adults do with each other in private in their free time, as long as neither of them is my spouse. All that the New York Times did to John McCain with its recent sexual expose was give him a bounce in his fund-raising -- at last, Americans behaving like the French! -- and some out-of-character TLC from Rush Limbaugh.

Now behold the newest entry in our country's quadrennial Presidential Candidate Dirt Peddlers' Parade. It is the new AP news story published today on Yahoo under the headline "Obama may face grilling on patriotism." Well, as we like to say here in Kansas -- lions and tigers, oh me, oh my! Senator Obama (gasp) was once photographed not putting his hand over his heart while reciting the pledge of allegiance. And even worse (GASP) he does not wear a flag lapel pin!

Symbols are strange and wonderful things. On the strange side, symbols of love and light are easily co-opted to serve dark purposes. The swastika once was a symbol for Christ. When der Fuehrer decided to fashion himself as the new savior not only of Germany, but of all the world, he made the swastika his own personal trademark. Then the real coup de grace came when he made the symbols of his political party the nation's only acceptable symbols for Germany itself.

Right now, right under our eyes, right-wing Republicans are pretty much trying to equate the grand old flag with the Grand Old Party. They have all but made the US flag their official party emblem. That is disgusting and desperate on their part. Being the party that has run out of ideas, they are trying to cover up their lack of substance with lapel pins. But maybe more than anything else, that's laughable!

For some time now, we have been living in a topsy-turvy universe. It is a place where war heroes like John Kerry and John McCain are painted as either traitors or psychotics or both, and draft dodgers like George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are painted as -- well -- war heroes. It is a place where politicians are considered staunch pro-lifers even though they like nothing better than the sight of dead men walking in the halls of state prisons and the red glare of rockets over the skies of oil-rich Middle Eastern countries. It is a place where somehow it is patriotic to fight progress and unpatriotic to pursue sound science. It is a place where such phenomena as hastening climate change and a ballooning national debt either don't exist or aren't nearly as big and bad as Al Gore and the Clintons say they are.

It is a place where the most patriotic thing you can do -- next to wearing the flag lapel pin, of course -- is to shop until you drop.

Hey Sister Alice! Good to see you back and in such good form! I agree that things are ridiculous and topsy turvy.

One thing I'm concerned about right now is the way that voters (with the aid of willing reporters and pundits) are making heroes or villains out of the presidential candidates. Both worry me - both the villain-making and the hero-making. Presidents should be neither hero or villain.

I wish the voters realized that we have a representative government and that the president is just one voice and the power of the presidency has been way overblown and over accentuated in recent years. We need to put more emphasis on our Congress, the legislation and money they appropriate and the people that we vote to have represent us in the people's house!

I am getting pretty tired of the hero worship and the witch hunts in the presidential race. I bet you are too.

Great post, girl!

Alice, I agree with your point of view on this!

Democratic National Convention

Everyday Citizen has been selected as one of only 55 blogs nationwide to be "embedded" with convention delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, August 25th to 29th. Plus, Everyday Citizen is among only 120 total blog sites credentialed in the nation.

Also thanks to wonderful hosts in Denver like ProgressNow and other orgs, many of our EC authors are looking forward to some great networking with other activists and grassroots organizers in the Big Tent in Denver. The Big Tent is a precious resource for our budget conscious and travel weary activists!

Our group of Everyday Citizen authors will be blogging from the Big Tent, blogging from the caucuses, and enjoying some unprecedented and unfettered access to the delegate floor, above and beyond the privileges provided to traditional media. We hope you stay tuned right here for your ongoing, close-up and ringside blog coverage of this historic convention!
